Allied Health Research at RBWH

The Allied Health Professions Service line is committed to integrating research within clinical care. We strive to combine research with ongoing education and consumer engagement to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our services in a rapidly changing health environment.

RBWH Allied Health Research is a diverse network of clinician-researchers, consumer representatives, and research mentors.

Allied Health Professions includes Audiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Orthotics and Prosthetics, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Social Work, Speech Pathology, and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Liaison Service.

Allied Health-led research programs include:

  • Establishing and understanding the role of Telehealth (specifically video calls) in a range of health conditions, such as chronic musculoskeletal conditions, head and neck cancer, and burns rehabilitation.
  • The use of Virtual Reality in supporting burns care management, as an adjunct to rehabilitation post-stroke and those with chronic low back pain, and communication disorders.
  • Stratified care models for individuals referred with complex, chronic musculoskeletal spinal pain conditions
  • Improving mealtime care
  • Obesity treatment and services research
  • Healthy pregnancy healthy baby
  • Burns therapy management
  • Cancer care treatment and rehabilitation services, including head and neck, bone marrow transplant, survivorship programs, lymphoedema early surveillance programs
  • Stroke and neurology
  • Eating disorder management
  • Inflammatory bowel disease management
  • Assessment and treatment of swallowing and communication disorders
