Caring for someone who is dying

Once you recognise some of the changes in the person who is dying, no doubt you will have many questions about how you can continue to care for them and ensure they are comfortable. While there are many practical things that can be done to provide supportive care in the last days and hours of life, taking the time to just be with the person is also important.

CarerHelp offer practical tips and information in their Caring for the dying person factsheet.

UK based organisation, Marie Curie has produced a 9-minute video on what to expect, including stories from those who have supported a loved one at end of life. You can watch the video here: What to expect at the end of life. Please note at the end of the video they provide information on a UK based support line. Information on available support lines within Australia can be found on our ‘Your Support Network page’.

Whether the person you are caring for is at home, in an aged care facility, or in a hospital or palliative care unit, there are many ways you can be there for them during the last few days. Carerhelp offers some further practical ways to connect with the person dying through touch, sound, proximity, smell, and sight. They also offer advice for being there when death occurs.
