Bookings and referrals
Genetic Health Queensland (GHQ) is a specialist service and requires a written referral from your doctor. Please discuss with your doctor whether an appointment with GHQ will be of benefit to you.
GHQ is a public health service provided by Queensland Health. Please note that we are only able to see patients who are 1) residents of QLD and 2) have a valid Medicare card. Eligible patients have no out-of-pocket expenses for services or genetic testing arranged by our service.
Do I need to see genetics?
- We are a specialist referral service. Many genetic conditions are fairly common and can be managed by your GP or relevant specialist. If you are not sure, please ask your treating doctor first.
- Our clinicians are available to help answer a specific clinical question or support your doctor in making a diagnosis or developing a management plan.
- We do not manage day-to-day patient care or provide long-term follow-up or screening. Once your assessment is complete, you will be discharged back to your referring clinician with a letter/summary detailing your assessment and any advice provided.
How do I request a referral?
- GHQ accepts referrals from GPs or specialists. Please discuss your concerns with your treating doctor. Please note that not all referrals are accepted.
- Your doctor may review our referral criteria to determine if a referral is appropriate.
- All referrals should be sent to the Metro North Central Patient Intake Unit.
- Once your referral has been received, you and your doctor will be notified. If your referral is accepted you will be placed on a waitlist and contacted in due course.
- Referrals reviewed by the clinical team are triaged based on clinical urgency.
- Not all referrals are within scope of our service and your doctor will be notified if your referral is not accepted.
