Bat found at Woody Point – risk of Australian Bat Lyssavirus
Metro North Public Health Unit is recommending anyone who had contact with a bat yesterday near Southern Cross Catholic College, King Street Woody Point to seek medical attention.
On Monday 17 March 2025, a bat was found on the ground near the school and given to a bat care organisation by a member of the public.
The bat later died and was not able to be tested for Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV).
All bats have the potential to carry ABLV.
ABLV infection is fatal to humans and transmitted through bites or scratches from infected bats; however, effective post-exposure treatment is available and can prevent infection.
The Metro North Public Health Unit is working with the school to communicate this information to students and parents.
Members of the public should not handle bats under any circumstances, even if they appear dead.
If you find a sick or injured bat, please contact the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or a local bat care organisation.
If you are worried about having been in contact with a bat, please contact the Metro North Public Health Unit on 3624 1111.
