What documents do I need to upload with my application?
Four documents are required to be uploaded:
- Cover letter – 1-2 pages
- Academic transcript
- Two referee reports

Who can I use for referee reports?
You can have the following options for your 2 referee reports:
Option 1: If you are working (eg Woolworths, McDonalds, etc)
- One from your clinical facilitator – third-year clinical placement and
- One from your line manager.
Option 2: If you are not working
- Two from a clinical facilitator – third-year clinical placement.
Option 3: If you work for an agency or on a casual pool and do not have any contact with your line manager
- Two referee reports from your third-year clinical placement clinical facilitator.
Option 4: If you work in an aged care facility and only work with a clinical manager or registered nurse who is in charge
- One from a clinical manager or in-charge registered nurse
- One from a clinical facilitator – third year clinical placement.

How long does Ahpra take to finalise registration?
Ahpra registration can take up to 4-6 weeks at the end of the year due to all the applications they will be receiving.
If I’m an international student do I need to sit an english test?
Yes, if you are an international student you need to sit your International English Learning Test Service (IELTS) this needs to be done prior to submitting your Ahpra application.
What do I do if I have already registered with Ahpra?
If you are already registered, please add your number in when doing your application.
I’m an International Students what do I need to do with my visa?
If you are currently on a visa please provide the visa details in your application, for example if you currently hold a student visa which will expire next year, you need to provide details of that visa and then you need to update us with your new visa grant when it has been approved so that we can update your visa details then.
Ensure you have checked with Department of Home Affairs about a suitable visa for you to work in Australia.
What do I need to add to my cover letter?
- In the cover letter we want you to sell yourself, tell us why you want to work in Metro North Health.
- Tell us why you are passionate for a particular speciality area.
- Tells us about your experiences (does not have to be nursing/midwifery related) that make you the best person for the job.
Do I need to submit a resume?
No need to upload a resume as this is demonstrated in your application.
What does each facility in Metro North Health offer in clinical areas?
Our graduate registered nurses and midwives webpage outlines what each of the 7 facilities/directorates offer in clinical areas.
What happens if I have a specific area I want to work in?
If you have a desire for a particular speciality area i.e. Surgical – Orthopaedics, then we highly recommend you put this information in the free text box which is found in the clinical preferences.
Does Metro North Health offer rotational programs for graduates?
Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Services (STARS) offer a rotational program, this means you do your first six months in one area, i.e. rehabilitation ward, and the second 6 months in another area, i.e. surgical ward.
How do I apply for 24-month specialty programs?
These specialty programs are additional opportunities and are not part of the application process. These opportunities have been able available to assist some of our health services with further nursing support when they have exhausted their graduate waitlist.
If I’m successful, how long is the graduate position?
All Metro North Health graduate positions will be offered temporarily at 56 hours per fortnight for 12 months.
How will I be contacted if I am successful?
We will contact you by email and by phone. Queensland Health calls will show up as a private number with no caller ID. Please ensure you have a message bank so that a voicemail message can be left on your mobile.
