Ward 5C (Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant)
Ward 5C is the Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and includes Radiation Speciality Suites. It is situated on Level 5 of the Joyce Tweddell Building. Each ward has their own routine, rules and facilities. Download Ward 5C Information Booklet for detailed information.
Ward 6A South (Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology)
Ward 6A South has temporarily relocated to 7A North (one floor up). Please proceed to level 7 of the Ned Hanlon Building and follow the signs.
Ward 6A South (6AS) specialises in the care of people receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy for solid tumour diseases e.g. Lung, Breast and Bowel cancers. Other types of cancers such as Blood cancers and people undergoing a range of cancer related treatments are accommodated in 6AS. It is located on the 6th Floor of the Ned Hanlon Building.

Visitor information
Ward 5C and Ward 6AS have an ‘open’ visiting hours policy, although only within reason. Visitors may be asked to leave the bedside if a procedure is to take place, or if the level of noise is disturbing other patients nearby. Relatives are requested not to sleep at the bedside. Arrangements can be made for a close relative to stay overnight in the visitors lounge if special circumstances arise with prior permission from the nurse night manager, or the shift coordinator if after business hours. All visitors MUST comply with the ward guidelines.
5C Ward rules
- Everyone must wash their hands before entering the ward and patient’s rooms
- Only 2 visitors at the bedside at any one time
- Sitting on patient’s bed is strictly not allowed
- Visitors must not eat or drink in patient rooms
- Children visiting must be 8 years or older
- If you have a cold, cough or infection you are not allowed on the ward
- Mobile phones must be switched off
- No flowers or live plants
- Do not use patient toilet facilities. Toilets are available in the public areas.
- No smoking
6AS Ward rules

After-hours access
The main access doors are locked by security between approximately 10.00pm and 6.00am. Access the hospital through the Emergency Department. Please notify nursing staff if you anticipate being locked out of the ward or the Joyce Tweddell Building, or if you have any family members expected after 10.00pm or before 6.00am.
What to bring
- Your Medicare card
- Private health insurance card (if you have one)
- Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
- Current medications (prescription, over the counter and herbal medicine)
- Relevant x-rays, scans or any other test results or reports
- Glasses, hearing and mobility aids
- A dressing gown or cardigan, sleepwear or comfortable day clothes
- Slippers and shoes (low heel, closed-in, non-slip, adjustable and firm fitting around the foot)
- Your toiletries and personal items
- Copy of Advanced Healthcare Directive or Enduring Power of Attorney if you have one
- Something to read or do during your stay
- A smart phone, tablet or laptop, connecting earphones and chargers so you can connect to the free MetroNorth-PatientWiFi and access entertainment. Televisions may not be available for use.
- Medical devices required for your care (e.g. CPAP machine)
- Do not bring large amounts of cash or valuables such as jewellery, watches or other items of value to you

Teaching and training
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital is a tertiary hospital, meaning that we have a close relationship with universities. With this in mind, you will often have fully supervised students observing and assisting with your treatments, which are an integral part of their learning; shaping the next generation of health professionals.
Other health services
You may access a range of services while undergoing cancer treatment. These can include nutritionists and dietitians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists, social workers and welfare officers.
