Gestational diabetes screening could be easier thanks to COVID

April is one of our social workers at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital working in domestic and family violence. She has worked with women and children for almost 30 years and knows that Christmas isn’t always a joyful time for families.

“The expectation is that Christmas is a happy, family focussed time – but not everyone is safe at home and the pressures of Christmas – spending more time together, financial pressure and increase alcohol intake can make things worse for them,” April said.

“The pressure never justifies the behaviour, but it can exacerbate violence and control, and it can also make it hard for people to reach out for help when they feel everyone is having a happy time around them.

“We have our social workers on at RBWH 24/7 and emergency and support services for DFV will not close over the holidays, so there will be people working hard to make sure support is available.”

Alan is the Associate Nurse Unit Manager in the Renal Department at RBWH and shares the importance of spending time with family.

Dialysis rarely takes a break, patients often need treatment three times a week for up to five hours but on Christmas Day, we wanted to ensure they can focus on what matters most, time with loved ones. 🎄

Last week, Redcliffe Hospital had a special visit from a few local heroes who were ready to spread some off-season festive cheer! 🎅 The NRL Dolphins stopped by the Paediatrics Emergency Department, ICU, and Cancer Care to deliver gifts and bring a smile to both the patients and staff. 🎁Cancer Care patient Lionel was especially excited to meet the team."It's been a tough month with my diagnosis, so it was a real treat to take my mind off things and meet the guys," he said.A big thank you to the RBWH Foundation for organizing this heartwarming visit. ❤️ ... Ever since my dad passed away, Christmas hasnt been the same. I didnt want to celebrate, but now I have a little five-month-old grandson Teddy, Christmas means so much more to me. I already cant wait to spoil him this Christmas. Being in hospital has made me appreciate the staff so much more, Im always quite a positive person and my goal is to make as many people as happy as I can.
