Meet patient Geoffrey. He's affectionately known as 'Wombat' and has called STARS home since January. 👋

When he leaves hospital, he is looking forward to getting back to the Redcliffe and District Amateur Radio Club, where he is the logbook administrator.

“I’ve been involved in amateur radio clubs for many years. I love being able to talk to people all over the world, from the Maldives to Turkey to Illinois. We talk about our previous working lives, our hobbies and other interests.”

“Many of the Americans I talk to are really interested in our native animals, which is also a love of mine. I particularly like macropods, but also the platypus and, of course, the wombat.”

Despite his health challenges, Geoffrey remains optimistic about the future. 🥰

“You just have to stay positive and think about getting better. My motto is from Monty Python’s Life of Brian, ‘Always look on the bright side of life’.”

“There are a lot of people worse off than me.”

All The Credit of my recovery : Should go to all firstly the Neurosurgical Team at the RBWH, They were Brilliant . Then I had Awesome Doctors and Exceptional Nurses of Ward 4A in STARS , also the Delightful Angie , Dan, Ashlee and the rest of the Wonderful Physio and OT Teams . They are all STARS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️in my eyes.

Onya Wombat. Keep your chin up. I wish you more of that strength and resilience that has got you through to now. Keep going beautiful soul.

Geoff, you were one of my favourite patients! I’m so glad to see you doing so well.

Good attitude to have wombat

Thanks for sharing a bit about your journey and approach Wombat! I didn't know there was amateur radio clubs - sounds great!

In 1965, the Rolling Stones couldn't get any 'Satisfaction', Mary Poppins was 'Practically Perfect', and on 30 June, Redcliffe Hospital opened its doors to provide healthcare for the Redcliffe Peninsula. 🏥

🎉 Over the last few weeks, current and former staff have been celebrating the hospital's 60th anniversary, including long-serving staff member Karen.

Currently Nurse Unit Manager of the Transit Lounge, Karen has used the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on her long association with the hospital.

"I was one of the last cohorts who trained on site here at Redcliffe back in the late 80s and have seen some remarkable changes over the years to both the hospital and the local area," Karen said.

"Nursing has evolved considerably in the last 30+ years through advances in technology, an expanded scope of work, increased focus on patient-centred care, and more recently, when Redcliffe Hospital transitioned to our digital health system last year."

As one of the fastest-growing areas of South East Queensland, the hospital is changing to keep pace with the needs of the community it serves.

"Our workforce has also grown and diversified to meet the evolving healthcare demands of the community, particularly as the population ages and health needs become more complex," Karen said.

"Redcliffe Hospital is an important part of the community and a lovely place to work. It's been great talking to other staff and patients recently about what the hospital means to them."

Thanks to Redcliffe Hospital staff past and present for their contributions. Here's to a bright future caring for the people of the Redcliffe Peninsula. 💗

I was actually in the Transit Lounge last Monday afternoon, waiting on prescriptions and blood test results! All the staff there went out of their way, to track down the blood test results from the doctor. This is not usually part of their job, but they still rang around and followed up as it was important before I was actually discharged! After spending 3 days in Redcliffe Hospital from last Saturday in the Resuscitation Unit, Short Stay Unit and then in a ward…I can’t sing highly enough the praises for the medical teams and nurses 👏 I was treated with care and compassion, and even though it is always a busy hospital…the care given to me in those 3 days was exemplary! Now, the follow up care plan for the next 6 weeks has been established, I know that I will still be looked after by the medical team. Many thanks to the medical and nursing staff at Redcliffe Hospital 🙏
