We employ a range of nurses and midwives as health practitioners working in clinical, educational, research, virtual, and managerial positions. We have a workforce of more than 12,000 nurses and midwives that provide an important role in maintaining and improving health and wellbeing for our patients, clients, and community within the following health professions:

    Assistant in nursing roles

Assistants in nursing provide nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife. We employ them in a wide range of clinical settings including acute care, aged care, and peri-operatives services. Assistants in nursing must hold a relevant Certificate III that is offered at most TAFE providers (for example – Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, or Certificate III in Individual Support).

Undergraduate students in nursing or midwifery roles

Undergraduate students in nursing or midwifery work under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife. We may employ them if they’re undertaking or have completed, on a full time basis, the second semester of the second year of a pre-registration university program or are undertaking the fourth semester of a second year post graduate pre-registration university program in a nursing or midwifery qualification approved by the NMBA.  We may employ undergraduate students of nursing and midwifery in acute care and subacute care settings.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cadetships

The Cadetship program is designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students studying their first undergraduate qualification in nursing or midwifery. The program links students with us in a Cadetship arrangement involving full-time study and paid work placement. Placements are usually for 12 weeks. Cadetships take place in a range of settings including community health, primary health, and acute and subacute care.

    Enrolled nursing roles

Enrolled nurses work under the supervision of a registered nurse or midwife and provide direct and indirect care. Enrolled nurses work in a wide variety of settings including acute and subacute settings, primary health care settings, and residential care settings. Enrolled nurses with advanced skills demonstrate greater knowledge and skills and may work in specialty areas of practice.

Enrolled nurses are required to complete a Diploma of Nursing that is offered through most TAFE providers and hold nursing registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as an Enrolled Nurse (EN).

    Midwifery

As a midwife you’ll provide care, education, advice, and support to women during pre-conception, pregnancy, labour, and birth. Midwifery is a rewarding profession offering many diverse career paths. No two days are the same, and you’ll play an integral role in creating families.

You need to complete a course approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board AHPRA (NMBA) that leads to registration as a Midwife. There are several pathways to become a midwife: from an undergraduate Bachelor of Midwifery, Dual degree registered nurse and midwife, and various Post Graduate courses for Registered Nurses.
