- Continuous infusion of Beta-Lactams in the critically ill: Considerations for global implementation 17 September 2025β-lactam antibiotics are the most commonly used antibiotics for the empiric and targeted treatment of infection in the critically ill. Timely administration of an effective dose of β-lactams is critical to reduce infection-associated morbidity and mortality. Continuous infusion (CI) of β-lactam antibiotics is now an evidence-based strategy to optimise treatment in critically ill patients with […]Kerina J Denny
- Are the ventral anterior temporal lobes involved in accessing conceptual knowledge during spoken word production? fMRI evidence from auditory naming 17 September 2025There is ongoing debate about the role of ventral anterior temporal lobe (vATL) regions in the initial stages of production, particularly in accessing conceptual knowledge, with most evidence coming from visual naming tasks. Here, we investigated whether these regions are engaged during naming from different types of auditory stimuli. Twenty-five participants completed an fMRI experiment […]Angelique Volfart
- Diagnostic and prognostic comparison of stress ECG, CMR and SPECT, alone and sequentially, in stable chest pain 17 September 2025CONCLUSIONS: In patients with suspected angina, CMR alone as the first-line test was more sensitive and prognostically accurate than exercise ECG, SPECT, or sequential combination of both tests.Giandomenico Bisaccia
- CARI Guidelines Commentary on the KDIGO Clinical Practice Guideline for the Management of Glomerular Diseases 16 September 2025CONCLUSION: Our commentary underscores the need for increased participation in clinical trials to validate regional applicability and improve long-term outcomes for people with GD in Australia and New Zealand. Clinical trials of new medications have led to more treatment options that are awaiting approval.Bhadran Bose
- The effect of butyrylated starch on bowel polyps in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis: results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial 15 September 2025Butyrate may reduce risk of colorectal cancer and can be delivered to the colon using butyrylated starch (HAMSB). This trial evaluated effects of HAMSB on polyp burden in participants with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial. In three-6-month periods participants ingested 40 g/day of HAMSB or low amylose starch, […]Julie M Clarke
- Cesarean Delivery in Queensland, Australia-A Retrospective Study of Factors Associated With Primary and Secondary General Anesthesia 15 September 2025CONCLUSION: Anesthetists may use these results to anticipate secondary general anesthesia or modify primary techniques. Institutions located in remote areas and with fewer resources cared for more women with obesity, with implications for women and healthcare services.Victoria A Eley
- Phase 1, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, ascending single- and multiple-dose study of the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of intravenous xeruborbactam (QPX7728) in healthy adult subjects 15 September 2025The objective of this First-in-Human Phase 1, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was to assess the pharmacokinetics (PK), safety, and tolerability of the dual targeting beta-lactamase inhibitor xeruborbactam (QPX7728) in healthy adults. The study included single-ascending (SAD) and multiple-ascending dose (MAD) cohorts. Subjects received intravenous xeruborbactam at doses ranging from 250 to 2,000 mg. PK parameters […]María Patricia Hernández-Mitre

- Comparison of Cognitive Screening Tools Used to Assess Neurocognitive Side Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Systematic Review 15 September 2025This systematic review identified and critically appraised existing research comparing cognitive screening tools used to assess neurocognitive side effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). A systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines and the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis (SWiM) reporting guideline. A protocol was registered with the Open Sciences Network […]Jeremy Dodd
- Viewpoint on the Intersection Among Health Information, Misinformation, and Generative AI Technologies 15 September 2025In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has seen rapid advancements, with innovations such as large language models and generative AI evolving at a rapid pace. While this progress offers tremendous opportunities, it also presents risks, particularly in the creation, consumption, and amplification of information and its impact on population health and health program delivery. Thoughtful […]António Bandeira
- Radiographer - Clinician agreement on imaging selection for extremity injuries in the emergency department - A pilot study 14 September 2025CONCLUSION: Radiographers demonstrated strong agreement with ED consultants in determining appropriate imaging for musculoskeletal injuries, supporting the feasibility of radiographer-initiated X-ray (RIX) protocols.S Meredith
- The impact of geography and antimicrobial resistance on the incidence and outcomes of Elizabethkingia species bloodstream infection 14 September 2025We conducted a 20-year statewide cohort of 115 Elizabethkingia bloodstream infections in Queensland, Australia. Incidence was ∼9-fold higher in tropical vs temperate regions, with 61 % community-onset. Ciprofloxacin susceptibility was 74.8 %. Thirty-day mortality was 14.9 %, and ciprofloxacin resistance independently predicted death, though interpretation is limited without treatment data.Adam G Stewart
- Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction in Patients With Obesity: A Growing Cardiometabolic Concern 13 September 2025Heart failure (HF) affects approximately 2.1% of adult Australians and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Approximately half of all patients with HF have HF with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), which is increasing in incidence driven by an ageing population and an increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes. Obesity drives HFpEF via multiple […]Andrew P Sindone
