Metro North is committed to providing a platform to acknowledge and promote research excellence within our health service. Below is a list of research publications from across our hospitals and services.
- Disaster Nephrology in Action: A Tech-Augmented Response to Cyclone Alfred 2 January 2026Cyclone Alfred disrupted dialysis services across South-East Queensland. Digital tools, including real-time surveys and AI-assisted analysis, were used to evaluate impact and guide immediate improvements. This low-cost, tech-enabled response demonstrated how agile methods can support disaster resilience and inform planning for vulnerable patient groups during extreme weather events.Archee Singh
- Codesigned framework for maximising the therapeutic value of rehabilitation mealtimes 1 January 2026CONCLUSION: This study provides a novel and co-designed framework to support maximising the therapeutic value of mealtimes, based on the values and priorities determined by consumers and staff. Future research should involve utilising the framework in practice and develop guidance for its use.Alice Pashley
- Effect of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs on surgical site infection and 30-day readmission in patients undergoing gastro-intestinal procedures: An umbrella review 1 January 2026CONCLUSIONS: Well-controlled primary research is warranted to understand the impact of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programs.Brigid M Gillespie
- The use of indirect calorimetry in patients with eating disorders. A scoping review 1 January 2026CONCLUSIONS: There is paucity of literature regarding practical considerations of using IC in adult patients hospitalised with eating disorders. Further research is required to inform the useful, sensitive, and robust use of IC in the target cohort.Michael Wilson
- Interactions Between Sarcopenia, Physical Frailty and Resting Energy Expenditure in Cirrhosis and Portal Hypertension 31 December 2025Background/Objectives: Sarcopenia and frailty are prevalent and independently prognostic in cirrhosis. Few studies have evaluated both together to ascertain their interaction and phenotypic differences. None have studied their relationship with resting energy expenditure (REE). We simultaneously examined sarcopenia, frailty and REE in a cohort of patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension-a novel approach. Methods: We […]Rachael Jacob
- Accurate quantitation of antibiotic penetration through staphylococcal biofilms 31 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: Accurate quantitation of antibiotic biofilm penetration can be achieved using the transformed linear regression between the ZOI and antibiotic concentrations. Mathematical evidence was provided to support the importance of surface charge of antimicrobials on their biofilm penetration.Lou Bin
- Temporal trends of prostate cancer diagnostics in Australia: Has the introduction of a magnetic resonance imaging prostate subsidy fulfilled its cost-saving promises? 31 December 2025CONCLUSION: Government subsidised MRIp in Australia has a statistically significant effect on prostate biopsies. There has been a reduction in prostate biopsies, but this is likely more reflective of the rapid development and increasing complexity within prostate cancer diagnostics. Subsidy of MRI is questionable in its cost effectiveness.Matthew Qiu
- Technical issues in exercise video consultations do not negatively impact exercise intensity for participants with complex chronic conditions: a retrospective audit 31 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: Technical issues in this exercise video consultation intervention were not common and did not adversely affect exercise intensity attainment in-session. However, many participants did not achieve target intensities, possibly due to metabolic co-morbidities. These findings support the viability of video consultations for exercise delivery, emphasizing the need for tailored training and support to optimize […]Riley C C Brown
- Human Factors in Airway Management: Designing Systems for Safer, Team-Based Care 30 December 2025The increasing complexity of airway management, particularly in high-stakes or emergency settings, demands a holistic approach that accounts not only for technical skill but also for the systems in which clinicians operate. Advances in airway devices such as videolaryngoscopes, videolaryngeal mask airways, flexible intubation scopes, combined techniques, and single-use technologies offer new opportunities for improving […]Manuel Á Gómez-Ríos
- Beneficial Effects of Intravenous Immunoglobulin Treatment in a Mouse Preclinical Model of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury 30 December 2025The long-term sequelae of severe penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI) include neurological and psychiatric disability, impaired cognitive function, and the development of post-traumatic epilepsy. The present study evaluated the therapeutic effects of intravenous immunoglobin (IVIg), a well-established immunomodulatory treatment, in a controlled cortical impact model of severe TBI in mice. The beneficial effects of IVIg […]Min Chen
- Formative research for a pre-operative psychosocial screening program for cardiac surgical patients: The EMBRACE study, a mixed methods knowledge to action protocol 30 December 2025CONCLUSION: Inconsistent evidence on screening program implementation and patient benefit necessitates a re-evaluation of locally contextualised evidence. This formative research study design will provide a contextual evidence-base including patient perspectives. This can be used to underpin the collaborative co-design of a multidisciplinary, blended model of care leveraging efficient and cost-effective care services suited to patient […]Susan E Smith
- Bilateral frontal periventricular nodular heterotopia: a distinctive cortical malformation 30 December 2025BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is a common malformation of cortical development. We describe a distinctive imaging phenotype characterized by bilateral small heterotopic nodules of grey matter in the frontal periventricular regions, with an overview of the clinical, imaging, and genetic features.Ine Hoogwijs
- A preliminary investigation of a Geriatric Depression Scale, Dementia version (GDS-D) 30 December 2025CONCLUSION: The GDS-D enhances depression screening in a memory clinic setting by excluding the confounding items of other GDS versions. In addition, it performs better at diagnosing depression in a dementia cohort. Future studies should validate its utility in larger, diverse dementia populations.Joshua Flavell
- Can vocational advice be delivered in primary care? The Work And Vocational advicE (WAVE) mixed method single arm feasibility study 30 December 2025CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that delivering VA in primary care is feasible and acceptable. To ensure a future trial is feasible, recruitment strategies and data collection methods require additional refinement.Gwenllian Wynne-Jones
- Vascular Access Specialist Teams Across Australia and New Zealand: A Survey of Workforce Models and Clinical Practice 30 December 2025CONCLUSION: VAST presence was associated with greater use of escalation pathways and varied device type/technique such as ultrasound guided-PIVCs and midlines. However, limited staffing restricts the broader implementation of these benefits.Nicole Marsh
