Metro North is committed to providing a platform to acknowledge and promote research excellence within our health service. Below is a list of research publications from across our hospitals and services.
- Left ventricular unloading during extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation: a target trial emulation of the ELSO registry 9 May 2025CONCLUSIONS: Left ventricular unloading was not associated with improved survival in the context of ECPR and may increase complication rates. Randomised data are required to confirm these findings.Ryan Ruiyang Ling
- Co-design of an outcome measure for hand burn injuries 9 May 2025CONCLUSION: The newly developed outcome measure will require further testing to determine psychometric properties.Andrea Mc Kittrick
- Safe and effective use of vancomycin 9 May 2025Vancomycin is an important antimicrobial for prophylactic, empirical and directed therapy of Gram-positive organisms. Therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended for all patients expected to receive vancomycin for more than 48 hours to optimise drug exposure. Monitoring the area under the concentration-time curve over a 24-hour period (AUC(24)) for vancomycin is preferred over monitoring trough plasma […]Amy Legg
- Development of dietetic staffing requirements for adult intestinal failure services using a best-practice model 9 May 2025CONCLUSION: Use of a bottom-up methodology allows calculation of staffing to meet best practice. Proposed dietetic staffing levels obtained from this study are far greater than current allocated staffing within the Australian adult CIF setting. Adequate dietetic resourcing may reduce patient complications and improve quality of life, resulting in enhanced patient and clinical outcomes.Sharon Carey
- Response to letter commenting on: Do the differing vaping and smoking trends in Australia and New Zealand reflect different regulatory policies? 9 May 2025No abstractColin Paul Mendelsohn
- Why the Rise of Predatory Journals: View of the Prey 7 May 2025For many authors, the publishing world is opaque and complex. With the rise of predatory journals, the sharks are circling inexperienced authors. There have been steps taken by publishers to mitigate the risk to scientific publishing, and this article seeks to approach the issue from the author's view.David A Clark
- What is the Role of Primary Prevention of Obesity in an Age of Effective Pharmaceuticals? 7 May 2025PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To examine the evidence and continuing role of strategies for the primary prevention and treatment of obesity in the context of effective obesity pharmacotherapies, through a narrative review.María Gómez-Martín
- How Low Can You Go: Finally a Lower Limit of Normality? 7 May 2025No abstractJames D Thomas
- Unravelling T Cell Immunity in CAR-T Therapy: Implications for Influenza Vaccination 7 May 2025No abstractAdam G Stewart
- Speciation of coagulase-negative staphylococci: A cohort study on clinical relevance and outcomes 7 May 2025CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the value of species-level identification in managing CoNS BSIs, particularly in cases with clinical signs and symptoms, to support antimicrobial stewardship.Samantha Keogh
- Cell-free mitochondrial DNA may predict the risk of post-operative complications and outcomes in surgical aortic valve replacement patients 6 May 2025Surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR) is the standard of care for severe aortic valve disease; however, post-operative complications continue to pose challenges. Inflammation caused by increased release of cell-free mitochondrial DNA (cf-mtDNA) during surgery may be a contributing factor. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the relationship between cf-mtDNA release and the […]Kieran Hyslop
- Population pharmacokinetics of intravenous fosfomycin: dose optimization for critically ill patients with and without kidney replacement therapy 5 May 2025We investigated the pharmacokinetics (PK) of intravenous fosfomycin in critically ill patients undergoing different types of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) to identify optimized dosing regimens for patient care. Four prospective, observational studies contributed data of critically ill patients with prolonged-intermittent KRT (PIKRT, n=18), continuous KRT (CKRT, n=15), or without KRT (n=12) for population PK analysis. […]Katharina M Götz
- Atrial fibrillation in critical illness: state of the art 5 May 2025Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia experienced by critically ill patients. It has been associated with adverse short-and long-term outcomes, including an increased risk of thromboembolic events, heart failure, and death. Due to complex and multifactorial pathophysiology, a heterogenous patient population, and a lack of clinical tools for risk stratification validated in this […]Stephanie Sibley
- Corticosteroids for adult patients hospitalised with non-viral community-acquired pneumonia: a systematic review and meta-analysis 5 May 2025CONCLUSION: Corticosteroids probably reduced short-term mortality and reduce the need for invasive mechanical ventilation in hospitalised patients with CAP.Tyler Pitre
- Reevaluating the safety of shortened antibiotic treatment: a critical evaluation of the EUROBACT-2 study. Authors' reply 5 May 2025No abstractLena Gajdos
