Metro North is committed to providing a platform to acknowledge and promote research excellence within our health service. Below is a list of research publications from across our hospitals and services.
- A Culturally Responsive Indigenous Health Worker Spirometry Training and Mentoring Programme (IHWS) Increases Quantity and Quality of Spirometry Performed in Primary Care 11 November 2025CONCLUSION: Two-day F2F culturally responsive IHWS training increases the quality of spirometry testing. Further increases in quality occur after telehealth mentoring. This model could be adapted to teach spirometry to First-Nation's health workers of other nations.Leanne Rodwell
- The feasibility of resistance training versus aerobic exercise in a rehabilitation setting for people living with psychotic disorders: A randomised controlled trial 11 November 2025CONCLUSION: In conclusion, resistance training was feasible and acceptable to people with psychotic disorders, with no serious adverse events and comparable to aerobic interval training. Resistance training was successfully implemented in rehabilitation settings with promising improvements in muscle strength and self-reported physical activity. In future, larger longer-term trials comparing resistance training with aerobic interval training, […]Nicole Korman
- A novel, standardised approach to balancing effectiveness, efficiency and utility of surveillance AI prediction models for hospitalised patients using sepsis prediction as an exemplar 11 November 2025CONCLUSION: Evaluations of prediction models for adverse events in hospitalised patients should incorporate the EEU approach in assessing model suitability and selecting alert thresholds.Anton H van der Vegt
- Global Variations in Practices after Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery; the PARTNER Study 11 November 2025CONCLUSION: The PARTNER study reveals significant international variation in postoperative management practices following MBS. These findings underscore the need for more standardized, evidence-based guidelines to improve long-term outcomes and equity of care worldwide.Danielle Clyde
- Robotic assisted bronchoscopy for peripheral pulmonary nodules - data review 10 November 2025PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Robotic Assisted bronchoscopy has emerged as an important tool in diagnosing small peripheral lung nodules in the era of CT screening. This paper reviews results from recent publications.David Fielding
- A Phase 3, Randomized Trial Investigating the Safety, Tolerability, and Immunogenicity of V116, an Adult-Specific Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine, in Pneumococcal Vaccine-Naïve Adults 18-64 Years of Age at Increased Risk of Pneumococcal Disease, STRIDE-8 10 November 2025CONCLUSIONS: V116 elicits robust immune responses and is well tolerated in adults 18-64 years of age with conditions associated with an increased risk of PD.Paul T Scott
- Association of obesity with thromboembolic complications after hip fracture surgery: a tertiary center retrospective cohort study (HipCLOTS) 10 November 2025CONCLUSIONS: BMI is significantly associated with 90-day thromboembolic complications and one-year mortality following hip fracture surgery. This highlights the need for prolonged thromboprophylaxis and regular follow-up in this patient group.Usha Gurunathan
- Proprotein Convertase Subtilisin/Kexin Type 9 (PCSK9) Inhibitors: A Novel Therapy in the Treatment of Cholesterol Crystal Embolism-Induced Kidney Injury 10 November 2025Cholesterol crystal embolism (CCE) is a challenging and often underrecognized cause of kidney impairment, especially in elderly patients with significant atherosclerotic disease. CCE typically arises from dislodged cholesterol crystals that migrate from atherosclerotic plaques to occlude small renal and systemic arteries. Here, we report a case of a 72-year-old man who presented with acute kidney […]Benjamin J Strimaitis
- Extremes of Age Versus Middle Decades of Life: A Population-Based Analysis of Colorectal Cancer Survival in Queensland, Australia 10 November 2025CONCLUSION: Patients diagnosed at EoA had a poorer 5YCSS compared to patients diagnosed in MDoL. Stage IV patients at EoA had poorer 5YSSS compared to patients in MDoL. This finding may be a result of more aggressive behaviour of CRC in young patients, within each stage, and increased frailty and comorbidity in older patients.Shahab Valizadehzare
- The Association Between Frailty and the Acute Management of Symptomatic Gallstone Disease in Older Adults 10 November 2025CONCLUSION: In this small cohort study, frailty was associated with acute management decisions in older patients presenting with gallstone disease. Further research is required to determine the strength of association of frailty on management and outcomes and how to appropriately select older patients who would benefit from surgical intervention.Hayley Chen
- Predictive Models for Mortality in Cardiogenic Shock: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis 10 November 2025CONCLUSIONS: Meta-analysis of six included scores revealed no clear "gold standard" prediction model, although the CardShock score had the highest discrimination and most accurate calibration. The degree of variability between studies precluded in-depth assessment of subgroup analysis. Further research into novel risk scores can be conducted to better inform clinicians on their utility.Gwyneth Weng Yi Ng
- Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on kidney biopsy research, practice, and diagnoses: A cross-sectional audit 8 November 2025The impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic extended beyond direct infection-associated complications to wide-reaching impacts on health system including workflow disruption, enhanced telehealth utilization, labor force changes, and access to procedures. Whilst it is clear that COVID-19 can affect histopathological findings on kidney biopsy, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on non-COVID-19 kidney disease […]Rachel M Brennan
- Ischemic Ventricular Septal Defect Presenting With Progressive Exertional Dyspnea 8 November 2025BACKGROUND: We present a case of postinfarct ventricular septal defect (VSD) presenting with exertional breathlessness, progressing to an index emergency presentation of biventricular heart failure and pulmonary embolism without shock.Satyen Hargovan
- "Student-delivered pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation: Feasible, Effective, and Supports New Care Models" 8 November 2025CONCLUSION: Student-delivered rehabilitation is feasible, safe, and associated with high participation and significant gains in exercise capacity and HRQOL. Supervision by qualified physiotherapists ensured quality and safety. While economic analysis was not conducted, the model may offer cost-effective benefits and warrants further investigation.Kathleen Hall
- CT perfusion identified potential treatment opportunities in one in five mild strokes 7 November 2025CONCLUSIONS: A substantial proportion of mild stroke patients harbour treatable perfusion deficits. CT perfusion provides essential prognostic information beyond clinical severity, supporting its role in guiding therapeutic decisions-even in low NIHSS presentations where standard imaging may otherwise overlook tissue at risk.Yohanna Kusuma
