Metro North is committed to providing a platform to acknowledge and promote research excellence within our health service. Below is a list of research publications from across our hospitals and services.
- A 10-Year Retrospective Cohort Study of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital 25 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: SJS/TEN incidence matched published rates. Severity of SJS/TEN and mortality were correlated. Neither systemic immune suppression nor time taken to be admitted to the definitive tertiary centre correlated with mortality. Expert multidisciplinary care in the RBWH ICU and Burns Unit is likely to contribute to the excellent mortality outcomes found. Limitations of the study […]Thomas Pagliaro
- Development of an evidence-based framework to guide delegation of clinical tasks to physiotherapy support workers in musculoskeletal outpatient physiotherapy services 24 February 2026No abstractPanos Sarigiovannis
- Computed Tomography Derived Procedure Simulations for Redo Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement 24 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: In this pilot study, MSCT-derived simulations of redo-TAVR provided accurate insights into coronary accessibility, TAV expansion, and residual valve area.Mark M P van den Dorpel
- Feasibility Trial of Prolonged versus Single-Dose Challenge in Penicillin Allergy 24 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: Conducting a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial of single-dose versus multidose oral amoxicillin challenge was feasible. A fully powered efficacy trial is needed to assess between-group differences in immune-mediated adverse events. (Funded by Austin Health and others; trial registration: ANZCTR - ACTRN12623001242617, registered on November 30, 2023.).Morgan Rose
- Diastolic dysfunction assessed by the 2025 American Society of Echocardiography guidelines and survival following myocardial infarction 24 February 2026CONCLUSION: Significant DD assessed by the 2025 ASE guidelines is a robust independent predictor of survival following MI, including the subgroup with LVEF≥40%, and compares favourably with the 2016 guidelines.Clement Tan
- The Role of Surveillance in the Association Between the Nurse Work Environment and Patient Safety Culture 23 February 2026Nursing surveillance has been identified as a core clinical process through which organizational conditions may influence patient safety; however, its explanatory role in the relationship between the nurse work environment and patient safety culture is not well established. This study examined whether nursing surveillance practices account for part of the association between the nurse work […]Kathryn A Connell
- Replacing ADT With dTpa in Queensland Emergency Departments: Another Opportunity for Pertussis Control? 23 February 2026No abstractMichael D Nissen
- Organizational Barriers and Enablers of Adult Mobility in General Acute Hospital Units: A Scoping Review 23 February 2026CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Studies reported many reported organizational barriers and enablers of mobility at the hospital level, with far fewer reported at the community and jurisdiction level. Few studies reported the perspectives of health service leadership, and investigating their perspective may provide greater insights to address these barriers. Consistent definitions of mobility could enable progress […]Joanne Stacey Nolan
- Decoding chronic pain: integrating genetics, neuroimaging, and AI for precision management 23 February 2026Chronic pain is increasingly recognised as a standalone medical condition shaped by interacting biological, psychological, and social determinants, affecting nearly one in three adults worldwide. This review synthesises contemporary evidence on the epidemiology, mechanisms, and management of chronic pain, with emphasis on the convergence of genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors. We draw on recent population-based […]Bade Uckac
- Rescuing impacted biliary extraction basket using cholangioscopy-directed lithotripsy and a pulley system 23 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: Cholangioscopy-guided lithotripsy is effective for releasing impacted baskets from entrapped stones. A pulley technique using grasping forceps can enable safe basket extraction by altering the vector of wire traction. This strategy provides a minimally invasive solution for managing an impacted biliary extraction basket.Hyun Jae Kim
- Embolic Myocardial Infarction from Takayasu Arteritis 23 February 2026No abstractJeng Hwan Lam
- Persistent air leak in the critically ill 23 February 2026No abstractD Mackintosh
- Reduction in complication rate and hospital length of stay following robotic arm-assisted simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty when compared to conventional techniques: a cohort study with minimum one year follow-up 23 February 2026No abstractWilliam Jordan
- Primary care Adherence To Heart failure guidelines in post-Discharge, Evaluation & Routine management (PATHFINDER): a randomised controlled trial 23 February 2026CONCLUSION: Hospital-based support for HF-management in primary care improved adherence to pharmacological and non-pharmacological components of guideline-recommended care. Greater implementation of transitional care processes of this nature has the potential to improve clinical outcomes for patients with HF.Liying Dai
- Attenuation of the CpG island methylator phenotype and lack of WNT signalling activation restrains Kras mutant intestinal neoplasia 23 February 2026CONCLUSION: Kras mutation can induce serrated neoplasia, but with significantly greater latency period and lower penetrance compared to Braf. Kras-mutant neoplasms display an attenuated CIMP-like phenotype, rarely developing aberrant WNT signalling. These data refine our understanding of MAPK-induced intestinal neoplasia.Lochlan Fennell
