- Upadacitinib Was Administered as a Sequential Salvage Therapy for Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis: A Case Report 21 February 2025CONCLUSION: This successful intervention not only avoided colectomy but demonstrated sustained clinical and sonographic remission 16 weeks of post-treatment. Upadacitinib, with its rapid action and efficacy, shows promise in ASUC and should be supported by registration trials and real-world studies. Despite successful outcomes in this case, further validation and long-term data are necessary.David Huynh
- Blood Transfusion Practices in Intensive Care: A Prospective Observational Binational Study 21 February 2025CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Blood transfusions are common in ICU, but the practice is heterogeneous and frequently inconsistent with national guidelines, and the number of units transfused per patient has increased. More evidence is required.Andrew W J Flint
- Securing Jugular Central Venous Catheters With Dressings Fixed to a Liquid Adhesive to Prevent Dressing Failure in Intensive Care Patients (the STICKY Trial): A Randomized Controlled Trial 21 February 2025CONCLUSIONS: MLA is associated with significantly decreased jugular CVC dressing failure and longer dressing dwell, with an acceptable safety profile. MLA should be considered to preserve jugular CVC dressings in ICU.Nicole Marsh
- The effect of comprehensive geriatric assessment on treatment decisions, supportive care received, and postoperative outcomes in older adults with cancer undergoing surgery: A systematic review 21 February 2025INTRODUCTION: Surgery is an essential part of cancer treatment, particularly for localised solid tumours. Geriatric assessments (GA) with tailored interventions or comprehensive GA (CGA) can identify frailty factors and needs of older adults with cancer, assisting treatment decisions and care strategies to reduce postoperative complications. This systematic review summarises the effects of GA/CGA compared to […]Domenica Disalvo
- Drain fluid iodine as a biomarker of anastomotic leak after low anterior resection in patients undergoing Gastrografin rectal tube flushes and omission of a diverting ileostomy: The GUSH study 20 February 2025CONCLUSION: This study showed that drain iodine can be used as a sensitive indicator of early AL in patients undergoing a rectal resection with an extraperitoneal colorectal anastomosis and omission of a DI and when the rectal tube is flushed with Gastrografin following surgery.David A Clark
- Near-Infrared Informed Huddle for Neonatal Peripheral Intravenous Catheterization: A Pre-Post-Intervention Study 20 February 2025CONCLUSION: The implementation of NIR-huddle failed to improve first-time insertion success, but PIVC dwell time and documentation were improved. Further research is needed to minimize harm and improve neonatal vascular access preservation.Deanne August
- Communication partner training for aged-care workers: A scoping review 20 February 2025CONCLUSIONS: There is a need for a comprehensive CPT program that is fit-for-purpose for direct care staff in aged-care settings. This program should address the multifaceted and intersecting communication support needs of aged-care recipients, including intercultural and intergenerational communication differences. The program should also incorporate resource-feasible delivery methods and evaluate dyadic communication outcomes. Closing these […]Bridget Burton
- A curious case of endogenous Ramularia endophthalmitis presenting as acute angle closure 20 February 2025CONCLUSION: This case highlights the unique presentation, treatment, and good outcome of a patient with endogenous endophthalmitis from a novel fungus, Ramularia.Williamson Jeremy P
- Comparison between point-of-care international normalised ratio, COAST, TICCS and truncated FibAT scores to rule in clinically significant hypofibrinogenaemia in the prehospital setting 20 February 2025CONCLUSIONS: PoCINR and a truncated FibAT are potential tools for the prehospital detection of hypofibrinogenaemia. Future work should examine the feasibility of PoC devices to test for hypofibrinogenaemia in the prehospital setting and if the use of PoC devices and/or clinical risk stratification tools would result in more rapid fibrinogen replacement.Daniel Bodnar
- Priorities for post-stroke aphasia service development: Prioritisation phase of an experience-based co-design study 19 February 2025CONCLUSIONS: Multi-stakeholder consensus was gained on seven priorities. Development, implementation, and evaluation of the co-designed concept plan for the top priority may decrease miscommunication in hospital settings and enhance experiences of people with aphasia communicating with healthcare providers.Lisa Anemaat
- Investigating Dose Level and Duration of Rehabilitation of Mechanically Ventilated Patients in the ICU 19 February 2025Background: The dose level and duration needed for early rehabilitation of mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU need to be characterized. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between mobilization level, rehabilitation time, and dose (defined as the mean mobilization quantification score [MQS]) during ICU admission and the end point walking independence at hospital […]Shinichi Watanabe
- Wellbeing as perceived and experienced by intensive care unit nurses: An interpretive qualitative analysis 19 February 2025CONCLUSION: This research explores the perceptions of wellbeing from an intensive care nurse's perspective. The four identified themes provide a comprehensive understanding of this topic from a unique viewpoint. This deep understanding is imperative for future research and the generation of meaningful interventions to promote wellbeing, with a goal to increase wellbeing and longevity of […]Annabel Levido
- Machine-learning versus traditional approaches to predict all-cause mortality for acute coronary syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis 19 February 2025CONCLUSION: Despite outperforming well-established prognostic tools such as the GRACE and TIMI scores, current clinical applications of ML approaches remain uncertain, particularly in view of the need for greater model validation.Aashray K Gupta
- Explainable time-to-progression predictions in multiple sclerosis 18 February 2025CONCLUSION: The binary classification models found in the literature can be extended to a time-to-event setting without loss of performance, thus allowing a more comprehensive prediction of patient prognosis. Furthermore, explainability techniques proved to be key to reach a better understanding of the model and increase validation of its behaviour.Robbe D'hondt
- First-year treatment response predicts the following 5-year disease course in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis 18 February 2025Predicting long-term prognosis and choosing the appropriate therapeutic approach in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the time of diagnosis is crucial in view of a personalized medicine. We investigated the impact of early therapeutic response on the 5-year prognosis of patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS). We recruited patients from MSBase Registry covering the period […]Simona Toscano
