- An α-specific PI3K inhibitor improves chemotherapy efficacy by inhibiting hepatic stellate cell activation in liver cancer 15 December 2025CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates a role of platinum-based chemotherapy on HSC activation in liver cancer. Selective targeting of PI3K p110α may provide a novel strategy to inhibit chemotherapy-induced HSC activation and improve treatment response.Qi Ruan
- Author Insights on the ISHLT Perioperative Utilization of ECLS In Lung Transplantation Consensus 14 December 2025The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Consensus for Perioperative Utilization of Extracorporeal Life Support in Lung Transplantation consists of 111 Delphi-derived statements across 3 separate manuscripts. These statements aim to provide comprehensive phase-of-care recommendations for international multidisciplinary teams to use in their clinical practice from time of recipient waitlisting to six-months post-hospital discharge. - Barriers to research faced by geriatric and general medicine trainees: results of a statewide survey 13 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights significant barriers to research engagement among Queensland geriatric and general medicine trainees. Enhanced local and statewide support, through increased non-clinical time and access to research resources, is needed to reduce barriers and foster research engagement.Kate Raine
- Hepatic steatosis detected on low-dose computed tomography in high-risk participants of a lung cancer screening program: a retrospective observational study 13 December 2025Moderate to severe hepatic steatosis was detected on low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in 15% of participants undergoing lung cancer screening in a retrospective observational study. Almost half of participants with hepatic steatosis (21/45) were at intermediate risk of liver fibrosis, with four participants (8.9%) at high risk based on Fibrosis-4 scores. Based on current guidelines, […]Asha Bonney
- In vitro efficacy of sulbactam/durlobactam combined with β-lactam antibiotics in Australian Mycobacterium abscessus isolates 12 December 2025CONCLUSION: Sulbactam/durlobactam significantly increased susceptibility to oral and intravenous β-lactam antibiotics in the form of cefuroxime, cefuroxime/amoxicillin and meropenem against clinical isolates of M. abscessus. This study also found significant differences in susceptibility to β-lactam antibiotics dependent on the culture media used, highlighting that the optimal culture methods for determining MIC in M. abscessus remains […]Kirby Patterson-Fahy
- Australian Real-World Effectiveness and Safety of Ustekinumab for the Treatment of Crohn's Disease: Results of the AURORA Study, Including the ANZIBD Consortium 12 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: This real-world study on the use of ustekinumab in Crohn's disease showed that short-term clinical response and remission rates are higher in bio-naïve compared with bio-exposed patients, with a high persistence rate at 15 months. The addition of an immunomodulator did not significantly impact outcomes. Ustekinumab was found to be safe in most patients.Yoon-Kyo An
- Antibacterial Pharmacokinetics in Critically Ill Patients Receiving Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO): A Systematic Review of Population Pharmacokinetic Studies 12 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that ECMO itself does not consistently alter the pharmacokinetics of most antibacterials in critically ill adult patients. Observed pharmacokinetic variability and subsequent dosing recommendations are primarily attributable to critical illness factors. Therapeutic drug monitoring is recommended to optimize exposure but minimize toxicity. Further prospective studies with standardized reporting of covariates and […]Chanelle Ren

- Anatomic versus reverse total shoulder replacement for patients with osteoarthritis and intact rotator cuff: the RAPSODI-UK randomised controlled trial protocol 12 December 2025INTRODUCTION: Shoulder osteoarthritis most commonly affects older adults, causing pain, reduced function and quality of life. Total shoulder replacements (TSRs) are indicated once other non-surgical options no longer provide adequate pain relief. Two main types of TSRs are widely used: anatomic TSR (aTSR) and reverse TSR (rTSR). It is not clear whether one TSR type […]Hannah L Rodrick
- Visual Function Assessment in Geographic Atrophy: A Review 12 December 2025Geographic atrophy (GA) causes significant vision impairment and reduction in vision-related quality of life. Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) is the gold standard of structural assessment of GA but is a surrogate marker for vision loss, which can be assessed by tests of visual function and functional vision. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), the most commonly used […]Ye Li
- First-time fathers' inclusion in, and engagement with, perinatal primary care: An integrative review 11 December 2025CONCLUSION: Further research exploring parents' and providers' views is required to guide more effective father-inclusive care. Engaging first-time fathers in primary care must go beyond practical strategies and address deeper systemic issues.Richard Pascal
- Wait a Minute or More (WAMM): a pragmatic stepped wedge cluster randomised implementation trial assessing the effect of a quality improvement programme on the proportion of infants achieving delayed cord clamping more than 60 s in infants <37 weeks' gestation in up to 20 maternity hospitals 11 December 2025INTRODUCTION: Delayed cord clamping (DCC) is an evidence-based intervention that reduces mortality, anaemia and disability in infants bornHimanshu Popat
- Uncovering age-related differences in communication by people with persistent pain when interacting with a pain history assessment chatbot in Australia: an exploratory mixed-methods study using a comparative analysis 10 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study provide insights into age-related differences in communication and preferences when using technology to communicate about persistent pain. Future research exploring individualised age-related approaches to pain assessment, supported by the findings of this study, in comparison to current standardised assessments administered by clinicians are warranted.Elizabeth Hay
- Maximising Participation in the Australian National Lung Cancer Screening Program: A Discrete Choice Experiment of Eligible, High-Risk Individuals 10 December 2025CONCLUSION: The results are highly relevant for the NLCSP, which commenced on 1 July 2025. Potential participants place significant value on program navigators, a role not funded within the program, which could significantly improve uptake.Peiwen Jiang
- RoLaCaRT-1: pilot randomised phase II study of robotic vs laparoscopic hemicolectomy for right colon cancer 10 December 2025CONCLUSIONS: RRHC improved short-term surgical morbidity and surgeon physical demand and performance whilst obtaining similar quality of life and pathological specimen quality compared to LRHC for right sided colon cancer, supporting the case for larger randomised trials.Andrew R L Stevenson
