- Proactive Management and Treatment of Aortic Stenosis: An International Expert Perspective 4 February 2026The 2025 European Society of Cardiology/European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery guidelines mark a pivotal change, challenging the paradigm of symptom-driven watchful waiting, and supporting earlier treatment in many patients with asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis. Building on this foundation, this international expert perspective advocates a comprehensive, proactive management strategy and offers clinicians a contemporary operational framework […]Christopher M Cook
- The relationship between impaired upper-body function, quality of life and breast cancer-related lymphoedema: results from a prospective, population-based cohort study 4 February 2026CONCLUSION: Future research evaluating whether prospective monitoring of upper-body function and interventions that can address impairment can reduce the risk of breast cancer-related lymphoedema are warranted.Hildegard M Reul-Hirche
- A Phase III triple-blind randomised placebo-controlled trial to evaluate effectiveness of early treatment with pregabalin to reduce pain severity after whiplash road traffic injury: study protocol for the PRioRTI Trial {1} 3 February 2026BACKGROUND: There are few effective treatments for acute whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) following a road traffic crash. Early clinical features of central sensitisation, for example widespread hyperalgesia, predict poor recovery. Pregabalin's effects on central sensitisation suggest the potential to prevent or modulate these processes after whiplash injury and prevent later chronic pain. Preliminary evidence indicates that […]Michele Sterling
- Pregabalin Toxicity in Kidney Failure: A Medication Error With Neurological Consequences 3 February 2026We present a case of pregabalin toxicity in a 50-year-old dialysis-dependent female, who presented with a one-day history of progressive weakness, lethargy, and gait disturbance. They were successfully treated with haemodialysis. The case is notable for the atypical toxidrome seen in kidney failure, which occurred after a community pharmacy error led to a single twelvefold-increased […]Adam G Selway
- Assembling the puzzle of antimicrobial resistance in staphylococcal biofilms 3 February 2026AbstractMultiple mechanisms underpinning biofilm antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have been studied individually. This study aimed to integrate these mechanisms, to understand their contributions to staphylococcal biofilm AMR, as a part of a whole, and to elucidate key hurdles hindering effective biofilm eradication by antimicrobial agents.Nine antibiotics were selected against microplate-based biofilms formed by Staphylococcus aureus ATCC […]Thuy Nguyen
- Dietitian-led very low-calorie diet for preoperative rehabilitation in patients with obesity awaiting non-bariatric elective laparoscopic surgery: A retrospective study 3 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: A dietitian-led preoperative VLCD intervention for 5-8 weeks can achieve clinically significant weight loss, primarily from fat mass. Exploratory analysis suggested lower preoperative fat mass may contribute to shorter surgical time, but further research is needed to control for other factors, such as complexity and surgeon experience.Gerald Wei Shen Wong
- Family-centred care interventions in paediatric intensive care units: a scoping review 3 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: This review highlighted wide variation in family-centred care interventions and outcome measures, with limited consistency in evaluation, replicability and quality. Family involvement in design was minimal, underscoring the need for more collaborative, co-designed initiatives.Karina R Charles
- A Successful Lung Transplantation in a Patient With Active Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Case Report 3 February 2026CONCLUSION: In carefully selected patients with limited donor availability, lung transplantation may be considered in active COVID-19 infected patient, accompanied by a tailored regimen of antiviral therapy and immunosuppression.Chandima Divithotawela
- Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Plus Mitomycin Versus Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Alone for Bacillus Calmette-Guérin-naïve Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer: A Randomised Phase 3 Trial (ANZUP 1301) 3 February 2026CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: BCG + MM was not proved superior to BCG alone, but required 39% fewer doses of BCG and fewer treatment discontinuations. These findings support consideration of BCG + MM as a pragmatic alternative to BCG alone, which could mitigate the global shortage of BCG.Dickon Hayne
- Geriatric Models of Surgical Care: A Scoping Review 2 February 2026CONCLUSION: Integrated geriatric perioperative care is expanding globally but remains limited outside orthopaedics. Research should shift from improvement projects to rigorous implementation for sustainable transformation, including nurse-led models. Critical examination is needed of whether current outcomes address comprehensive needs of older surgical patients or primarily optimise hospital flow.Sarah Hughes

- The Extent and Nature of Lived Experience Engagement in the Development of Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines, 2014-2025: A Scoping Review 2 February 2026CONCLUSIONS: It is encouraging that most Australian guidelines published during 2014-2025 reported at least some lived experience engagement in their development. However, extensive lived experience engagement was not reported for the vast majority of guidelines. The engagement of people with lived experience in guideline development needs to be improved to ensure that their values, views […]Anneliese Synnot
- Heterogeneity in liver transplantation practices for critically ill patients with chronic liver disease in the U.S 2 February 2026Liver transplantation (LT) in critically ill patients with chronic liver disease is high risk. Recent studies show that the frequency of intensive care unit (ICU) LTs has risen, and outcomes of such transplants have improved significantly. Variation in practices and the impact of center experience with ICU LTs on outcomes is unknown outside of acute […]Laura G Barr
- Time to blood culture positivity predicts metastatic infection in patients with bloodstream infection and correlates with persistence of detectable pathogens in the bloodstream by culture independent systems 2 February 2026No abstractAnna Maria Peri
- Osseointegration Group of Australia Accelerated Protocol-3 (OGAAP-3): protocol for a stratified approach to surgical technique and rehabilitation in lower limb amputees 2 February 2026INTRODUCTION: The Osseointegration Group of Australia Accelerated Protocol-3 (OGAAP-3) presents the latest iteration of a structured, prospective, clinical-based protocol for single-stage osseointegration surgery in lower limb amputees. Building on the foundational work of OGAAP-1 and OGAAP-2, this protocol incorporates a decade of institutional experience and over 1000 cases using the Osseointegrated Prosthetic Limb system. OGAAP-3 […]Munjed Al Muderis
