The co-design process

What are the steps involved in co-design?

The co-design process involves working through the following 6 steps:

"To embark on a journey without knowing the destination, but trusting in one's fellow travellers"

- Participant in Metro North co-design forum

Where do we start?

The co-design team should start at Step 1 and work their way through these steps, all the while knowing that the process may not be linear or as clear-cut as it appears in this framework.

Co-design needs to be flexible, so don’t feel that you need to follow this like a recipe. Use this resource as a starting point for you to then create a process that works best for your project and the people you are working with.

Who is involved?

Each step of the process involves the co-design team and the broader community of stakeholders.

The co-design team is responsible for leading the process and making the decisions. They involve, consult and inform the broader community of stakeholders at each step in the process.
