RBWH ETC Registrar Dr Jack Taylor has received the coveted Buchanan Prize for one of the highest scores in the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Fellowship Exam.
Four of the 187 trainees who sat the 2023 examination were named Buchanan Prize winners.
In the 18 months leading up to the exam, Dr Taylor spent most of his spare time reading textbooks and reciting flash cards. He studied with a group of fellow doctors at all hours of the day and night, in a range of settings including a local park!
The RBWH ED consultants, led by Dr Leanne Bennett, also ran weekly practice sessions for staff sitting the exam which was an invaluable resource and provided extra support to staff during a challenging time.
Dr Taylor said being named as a prize winner was a tremendous honour and quite a shock.
“I was ecstatic just to pass the exam as this was the last major hurdle to finishing my ED training,” Dr Taylor said.
“Winning the Buchanan Prize is a very special bonus on top, that reflects and rewards the significant amount of hard work and sacrifice that I put in over the past 18 months.
“Now that my exams are done, my ED training will finish, and I gain fellowship at the end of the year.
“I have taken up a position with LifeFlight as a retrieval registrar for the first half of next year, which is a job I have wanted to do for many years. Following this I will need to find an ED consultant job which is terrifying but very exciting.”
Congratulations Dr Jack Taylor.
