Adj. Prof. Alanna Geary, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer

This Sunday 5 May 2024 it is International Day of the Midwife. The theme for this year is ‘Sustainable Midwifery: Caring for Tomorrow’s World”. What an apt theme for midwifery and, in Metro North, a statement which would resonate with many. Midwives in Metro North do such an outstanding job and every day I feel so honoured to work alongside you. To each and every midwife in Metro North, thank you for all that you do.

It is now 37 years since I undertook my Midwifery hospital-based training at the then-Royal Women’s Hospital. Interestingly back in 1988 when I finished, I could not attain a position as a midwife. In the ensuing years I have regretted not having the ability to consolidate the wonderful skills I attained during that 12 months, but I am proud to be able to say that I do have knowledge of the wonderful role of the midwife, the skill and expertise requirements and I have many friends and colleagues who continue to work in the profession. Two of my grandchildren (and another on its way) have been born in Metro North. As a family we have been so thrilled with the care, compassion and professionalism provided and I know I speak for the thousands of people who attend our facilities every year. To all of you please know that we are very proud of the care you deliver every day to our community, to the families, mothers and babies who require our services. Thank you so very much.

Next week to commemorate International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day (May 12) I will be attending as many of our sites as possible. I plan to speak to as many of you as able, and if you would like to speak to me then please do come and say hello. I look forward to a great week and hope you are taking the opportunity to celebrate with your teams, congratulate yourselves on what you do every day and just relish in the fact that as far as I am concerned you work in the most amazing of professions (Nursing & Midwifery) in the biggest, best and nicest health service.

Until next week, stay safe!

Alanna.
