Changes to the Medicines and Poisons Act 2019 mean that all medication prescribers must register now for QScript.
QScript is a clinical tool providing real-time monitored medicines prescription information for prescribers and pharmacists to support safer clinical decision-making.
QScript is now available, and all relevant health practitioners must be registered in order to access the system.
In order to comply with the Medicines and Poisons Act 2019, relevant health practitioners are required to check QScript for patient records before:
- prescribing a monitored medicine
- dispensing a monitored medicine
- giving a treatment dose of a monitored medicine.
This applies to relevant health practitioners who are authorised to prescribe or dispense a monitored medicine, including those in private and public hospitals, aged care facilities, prisons and other health services.
What do you need to do?
- Access QScript site – www.health.qld.gov.au/clinical-practice/guidelines-procedures/medicines/real-time-reporting
- Register on the QScript site – You’ll need your AHPRA number and Prescriber number & preferred email address
- Complete QScript Learning Portal training – www.qscriptlearn.health.qld.gov.au/
You’ll need to set up a separate account with the learning portal (after registering). This will include your legislative requirements and how to use QScript for different health professionals.
Recognising that this legislated change will present significant challenges for prescribers and dispensers in acute hospital facilities, Metro North Health is advocating on behalf of all doctors and pharmacists to seek some potential exemptions.
Today I held a vidcast on QScript with RBWH Director Pharmacy Ian Coombes, Metro North ED Safety and Quality Michele Gardner, GP Liaison Dr James Collins, and RBWH Director Clinical Pharmacology Dr Peter Donovan. We discussed what the changes mean for medication prescribers and dispensers. If you weren’t able to attend, a recording will be available on QHEPS in the next couple of days.
