BEMS raises awareness for prostate cancer
The RBWH Building, Engineering and Maintenance Service (BEMS) team are known for the great job they do keeping our facility looking great and working as it should.
Behind the scenes, they’ve been helping raise awareness of prostate cancer and the risks amongst their team. Recently, the entire BEMS team took part in an educational talk where they learnt about what to look out for, the importance of early detection and how to get tested. Thanks to Drew Cameron from the carpenters team for organising the talk!

Recently, the RBWH Radiation Therapy, Radiography and Nuclear Medicine teams celebrated International Radiographers and Radiation Therapist Week to coincide with the discovery of x-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen on 8 November 1895. The team held celebrations across multiple departments as part of the day. Thanks to our Radiation Therapy, Radiography and Nuclear Medicine teams for your ongoing commitment to delivering world class diagnostic procedures to all RBWH patients.
NAIDOC Week at RBWH
Between 8-14 November, RBWH alongside the rest of Australia celebrated NAIDOC Week 2020. NAIDOC Week is a time for us all to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
RBWH celebrated with a range of activities including the opportunity for staff to see the Better Together Van, live music from local Aboriginal musical duet The Huntsman and local department events held throughout the hospital.
The Indigenous Hospital Liaison Service (IHLO) put together a special display to help educate staff on what NAIDOC Week means and the origin behind it. Well done to the team involved.
The Green Team gets busy with recycling!
The Green Team got into the spirit of National Recycling Week between 9-15 November by planning a range of initiatives for staff.
Throughout the week, more than 40 old mobile phones were recycled, 30kgs of old batteries were received by the waste department, and the E waste and coffee cup bins are full to the brim.
Well done to all staff on their huge recycling efforts. Keep up the great work.
Darkness to Daylight 2020
Staff from across RBWH joined the Darkness to Daylight 2020 virtual challenge in October to raise funds and awareness for domestic violence. Led by the RBWH Social Work department, 55 staff members joined the Team Royal crew.
The Team Royal team raised $6489, with all funds going to Australia’s CEO Challenge so they can continue their work promoting prevention and awareness of domestic violence in the workplace. They also aim to spread awareness that workplaces can be powerful places of meaningful support and social change. The team can’t wait for next year’s event!
World COPD Day!
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation group at RBWH celebrated World COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Day on 18 November 2020 by exercising in the gym at RBWH and raising awareness for Pulmonary Rehabilitation for people affected by COPD. COPD is the second leading cause of avoidable hospital admissions in Australia. Around 1 in 7 Australians aged 40 years and over have some form of COPD. Well done team!
PharMOcy Movember
The RBWH Pharmacy Team got into the spirit of Movember, with more than ten team members growing their cookie dusters and soup strainers for a good cause.
Together the team have raised more than $3,300 for men’s health. The highest bidder was given the opportunity to choose Andy Hale’s mo green and gold, which hurt a lot as an English cricket supporter!
