Dear colleagues,

As part of the celebrations for International Day of the Midwife on May 5 and International Nurses Day on May 12, this year we launched the for the first time the Metro North Nursing and Midwifery Awards. We held a virtual ceremony on Wednesday 19 May linking with all our sites across Metro North. Shaun Drummond our CE was with me to present the awards and we were very pleased to see so many people joining in. Many people have commented on how special it was, and I agree.  We work so differently across the HHS but our professions of nursing and midwifery bind us together. It was heartening to see so many happy, smiling and proud faces.

Every clinical directorate was represented, with 45 finalists from right across Metro North.   Congratulations to all of the finalists. To be a finalist was impressive as we received so many wonderful and worthy nominations. Every nominee is to be congratulated, every finalist deserves a round of applause and of course to our outstanding winners… WELL DONE!

To that end here they are:

  • Registered Nurse of the Year – Vienna Faumui, TPCH
  • Registered Midwife of the Year – Camilla Carroll, RBWH
  • Graduate of 2021 – Alexander Smith, Caboolture Hospital
  • Enrolled Nurse/Enrolled Nurse Advanced Skills – Darryl Hartwig, Metro North Mental Health (Pine Rivers)
  • Assistant in Nursing of the Year – Amanda Hazelman, Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service
  • Nurse/Midwife Leader – Alexis Austin, Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service
  • Dr Lesley Fleming OAM Professional Practice and Clinical Excellence Award – Julia Brownlee, RBWH

I’m incredibly proud the amazing work of all our nurses and midwives at all levels of the organisation. Nurses and midwives are involved at every stage of a patient’s journey and are often the people who spend the most time with a patient and their family while they’re in our care. These awards signify the importance of our professions and acknowledge those who go above and beyond to achieve excellence in clinical care. Congratulations to all, your colleagues and peers are so very delighted for you.

As we start to head into the winter season and the weather is cooling, I would just like to remind you to take care of you. Remember COVID-19 vaccinations are for all staff and the flu shot is also now readily available. Let hope we can get through the next few months feeling as well as we possibly can!!!

Regards,

Alanna
