Feedback from recent vidcasts

Thank you to everyone who tuned in to the vidcasts that Jackie Hanson and I presented on Thursday 30 March and today. It was a great opportunity to provide more information to staff on short notice accreditation and to answer any questions or concerns staff had about the process.

In today’s vidcast we talked about the components of Standard 1: Clinical Governance, and the Metro North Compassionate Care Principles. You can see the links to the Standards on QHEPS.

Some of the questions from the vidcast participants related to the benefits of short notice accreditation in comparison to the previous method of accreditation.

Hospitals which have already been through short notice accreditation report that the process is less onerous, requires less staff resources and results in greater staff engagement in quality and safety. This is reflected in a comment from a RBWH staff member who recently participated in a peer review as preparation for short notice accreditation:

We had two MNH clinical governance, quality, safety, and risk peer review subject matter experts come to our clinical areas at RBWH. It was an easy process, and it was useful to see what they were interested in and focused on.”

A further question we received via the vidcast was:

Can you please elaborate on what a welcoming space is meant to be regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in line with the standards.”

This question refers to Action 1.33, one of six actions that the NSQS include to specifically address the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Action 1.33 is: The health service organisation demonstrates a welcoming environment that recognises the importance of cultural beliefs and practices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

As Jackie detailed, there are many examples of Metro North provide a welcoming environment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This includes easily identified phone kiosks that directly connect to Indigenous Hospital Liaison Officers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artwork on staff shirts or scrubs, on the outside of the hospital buildings and/or entries, and other specific initiatives like the Sista Shawl for breast screening and Kam Biman (blankets for palliative care patients).

For more information on actions that are specific to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people please see the factsheet.

We will be holding a series of vidcasts over the next few months on short notice accreditation so look out for the notices in your bulletins.
