Iron staining
Last week the Safe and Effective Medication Research Collaborative (SEMPRC), a collaboration between The University of Queensland and Metro North Health, released a report into intravenous iron staining across Metro North Health.IV iron administration and an IV iron prescribing learning package have been developed. The Metro North Intravenous Iron procedure also provides decision support for staff. Consider using these as part of your continuous professional development plan, particularly if you are working in a clinical area where IV iron is commonly prescribed and administered. View the complete report.
The report estimated an IV iron staining rate of 0.31 stains per 100 iron infusions which is below the benchmark within the published literature of 0.68 stains per 100 infusions. While this highlights the high quality of care provided to patients, it also highlighted opportunities for improvement. To support staff in achieving the recommendations, anKind regards,
Grant.
