Today I want to wish all our amazing Midwives a happy International Day of the Midwife and thank them for the focused, professional and women and families-centred care they provide.

International Day of the Midwife today (Sunday 5 May) celebrates the pivotal role that midwives play in delivering safe and compassionate care in our community.

It celebrates the midwifery profession and recognises the integral role midwives play in listening, advocating and supporting women through pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

This year’s International Day of the Midwife theme is “Midwives: A Vital Climate Solution”.  Climate change poses unprecedented challenges to health, especially for women and babies.

This is an important message for us in CKW, Queensland, Australia and globally as we celebrate this day of very special healthcare workers – our midwives!

Our midwives are truly health superheroes. They work closely with local women to deliver about 1800 babies at Caboolture Hospital each year.

To highlight some of the amazing work our midwifery team do that is not what we immediately think about, I thought I would showcase the recently opened Women, Children and Family Centre at 25 Leda Boulevard in Morayfield, near Morayfield Shopping Centre, that we (CKW Clinical Directorate) recently opened:

The new centre is home to our Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) teams, Midwives and Me, and Damara, as well as the Starting Well Initiative, and lactation consultants who host clinics two days per week.

The centre is primarily used to see women and their families for all their antenatal and some postnatal visits.

It has a relaxed atmosphere, easy to access and has a less ‘medical’ feel and allows each visit to be determined by each woman’s needs.

Midwives and Me MGP Team Leader Robyn Alexander was recently featured on the Metro North Facebook page. Here is her story.

International Day of the Midwife 2024 email bannerToday is also an opportunity to highlight the important work of midwives globally.

I am sure you will all join me to acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful CKW midwives who everyday add to the population, health and joy of our community!

Happy International Day of the Midwife 2024 to all our CKW Midwives and thank you to all of you, who bring so much of yourselves to the work you do and give endlessly.

Have a great day,

Karlene.
