Preventing mould in the workplace

With the current wet weather, RBWH would like to take this opportunity to issue a timely reminder about preventing mould in the workplace. Mould is a type of fungus that is present virtually everywhere, both outdoors and indoors and normally presents little to no risk to our health. However, from time to time it can cause health and safety issues. Here are some tips on how to prevent mould in your workplace by controlling water intrusion, excessive moisture and reducing organic materials (ie. paper, wood etc):

  • Regular inspection – It is important to regularly inspect your work area for mould and immediately report any mould to your Line Manager (prompt management is essential) so cleaning or remediation can be completed as soon as possible. Maintain the building and its fixtures and undertake repairs promptly to prevent water damage and reduce humidity levels.
  • Good housekeeping – Reduce paper, cardboard, porous items, and dust in the work area, keep doors open where possible and improve general ventilation.
  • Determine sources of moisture – Internal plumbing leaks, surface water, condensation, steam from cooking or showering and weather events such as flooding, or storm inundation may contribute.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping RBWH safe.
