Today, Friday 12 May, is a day that is very close to the heart of our hospital as we celebrate International Nurses Day. Nursing professionals make up the majority of our workforce and play an essential role in our healthcare delivery. Every day, around the clock, our nurses display compassion, expertise, and professionalism in caring for our patients.

We hear countless stories of nurses and midwives going above and beyond for patients and their families. The overwhelming theme is how the care and empathy shown to them by our team has made a difficult time in their lives a more positive experience. Our nurses and midwives are creating a legacy with every shift they work, every interaction they have, and with everyone they meet.

As many of you are aware, International Nurses Day is celebrated on the birthday of Florence Nightingale OM RRC DStJ who is widely recognised as the founder of modern nursing. Florence commenced her nursing career in 1850. By 1854 she was leading the nursing response in the Crimean War, gaining notoriety as the Lady with the Lamp. In 1860, she established the first scientifically based nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital, London. Just four years into her nursing career she set an example and fundamentally changed practice which we still acknowledge today.

The role of nurses has evolved significantly over the past 100 years, with nurses now regarded as experts and trusted advisors to their healthcare colleagues. Nursing and midwifery research is continuing to grow, and we are excited to see how nursing research findings help shape the future of healthcare.

We also recognise the challenges of the nursing profession and applaud our nurses for their ongoing commitment to innovation and problem-solving in their field. Thank you for showing up for your patients and colleagues and displaying kindness and respect. We are here to support you.

We would also like to give a special mention to our offsite nurses and midwives. You are all very much part of Team Royal and we appreciate your commitment. Keep an eye out for some treats coming to your work areas.

The hospital has commenced celebrations today for both our nurses and midwives on the Level 1 walkway and we encourage our nursing and midwifery teams to come by for a free coffee before 5pm.
