Louise Oriti, Executive Director, Redcliffe Hospital

As we get closer to the end of the year, it’s certainly feeling a lot like Christmas at Redcliffe Hospital.

Thank you to REDDY Fun & Fitness for arranging the Christmas carols with Roar Performing Arts and to everyone who came along to spread Christmas joy.

Thanks again to Elwyn and everyone who joined in the rock painting

The final touches are now on Christmas decoration displays across the hospital, with the judging happening next Monday.

Even the Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group’s wrap-up in the ZEN Den on Thursday had a certain Christmas feel to it. Thanks again to Elwyn and everyone who joined in the rock painting (pictured).

As busy as everyone has been – it’s great that we can still find time to celebrate the good things, the small things, the big things. They all matter.

Christmas and end-of-year gatherings

At this time of year, everyone is getting together with friends and colleagues. Our Infection Prevention team has some advice on making those gatherings a little more COVID-safe.

  • Gathering outside is safer
  • If indoors, keep numbers small and spaces big
  • Try to maintain physical distance (two big steps)
  • Avoid shared food plates and platters

As always too, if you’re unwell or have any symptoms, stay home and test with a RAT.

#IamRedcliffe Team of the Month

We held our final Staff Forum of 2022 this week and announced November’s #IamRedcliffe Team of the Month. Dr Jimmy Tee, our acting Director of General Surgery, received the November award for his work leading the General Surgery Team. Those who nominated Dr Tee say he’s engaging, friendly, and positive about our capacity for change – all valuable attributes as we approach our hospital expansion.

Congratulations also to those nominated for the November award, including the General Surgery team in Theatre and Outpatients, the 5 East nursing team, and the Physiotherapy Department.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to nominate a team or team member this year.

Voluntary Assisted Dying

The new year always brings changes, and this year there is one change we all need to know about. Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation takes effect from 1 January 2023 – and it means that we all have new legal obligations. The best way find out what you need to know is by completing the training for hospital staff.

You can also find out more about how VAD will work across Metro North on QHEPS or from Queensland Health.

Executive arrangements

I’ll be away on leave from this weekend. While I’m away, Geoff Grima will be the Acting Executive Director, with Tracey Brighton acting in Geoff’s role as allied health director.

Janene Farr is taking some leave too. In her absence, Amanda Carfoot will be looking after Facility Services and Wendy Luff will be managing Patient Services.

Grant Carey-Ide will be away from this afternoon as well, with Lynne Ruiz our acting Safety and Quality Director until Monday, 9 January.

On a personal note from me

In some ways, we’re ending the year much the same way we started it. We’re wearing masks at work, we have colleagues off sick, and we’re caring for a ward of COVID patients on Level 6. Still, things are very different now. COVID may still be with us, but it no longer defines or dictates everything we do in our hospital.

We have plenty to look forward to in 2023 too. We can look forward to commissioning our new Emergency Department Paediatric section, we’ll be taking some exciting steps toward introducing ieMR, and things will really be ramping up around the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion.

As we head into Christmas, I hope everyone will have time to spend with their family and those they love. Thank you to everyone for their work this year, both in caring for our patients and in supporting each other.

See you all in the new year.
