Tami Photinos, Executive Director

This will be my final message for the year and I would like to thank everyone for their contributions and hard work throughout 2023. It’s been another big year and we’ve continued to achieve a lot as a team.

As Executive Director, I feel privileged to lead and work alongside the many fantastic individuals and teams who support the delivery of high quality care to our patients, consumers and community. When I meet with various teams throughout the hospital, I am always impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm of our staff towards the work they do and this is reflected in the excellent outcomes we achieve here at TPCH.

I’d like to share some of our key achievements throughout 2023:

  • Launch of Charlies Village in Cognitive Assessment and Management Unit to improve the experience of patients living with dementia – an Australian first
  • Respiratory Investigations Unit 60th anniversary
  • Cardiology marks 15 years of pioneering transaortic valve implantation for Queensland
  • TPCH becomes first hospital in Australia to establish a partnership with the Career Trackers High School Program, supporting First Nations students to make informed future career choices.
  • Opening of new 6-bed Short Stay Unit in Adult Emergency Department
  • Fractured Neck of Femur service awarded as Golden Hip Award finalist for top performing in Australia against the indicators in the Australian and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry’s Hip Fracture Care Clinical Standard
  • Commencement of works on new 1,500 bay car parking facility.

While these are just some of our ‘big ticket’ items, it is equally important to acknowledge the day-to-day care provided by our staff which contributes to the improved health outcomes and a positive experience for our patients.

This week we have also received accreditation for Kallangur Satellite Hospital. Well done to the team!

With such a big year behind us and another one ahead of us, I would like to take this opportunity to convey my appreciation for all the work people do at TPCH. A shout out to Steve Francia and the hard working team at The Common Good including our Charlies Angels volunteers for their wonderful support throughout the year.

These holidays, I hope you enjoy some quality time with your loved ones and get the chance to unwind and relax away from the pressures of work.

I’m going to have a quiet Xmas day with my family. It will be difficult following the passing of my brother in October, so I will draw strength and comfort from my family filled with cherished memories.

For those staff who are working, thank you for your commitment to our patients.

Social Work teamClosing thought

I’d like to leave you with an inspirational example of true compassion and care that recently occurred at TPCH, reminding us of the humanity and dignity we can instil as health workers.

We recently had a palliative patient in EMU whose dying wish was to marry his partner of 40 years. Several members of the Social Work team including Sheree Rigby and Niance Koegelengerg worked tirelessly to make the patient’s wish a reality before he passed away, arranging a celebrant, the necessary documentation and working with staff on the ward. Because of the Social Work team’s efforts, the patient was able to marry his partner in comfort before he passed away only hours after.

What a special moment for everyone who was part of the experience.

The Executive team and I wish you all a safe, happy and peaceful festive season, and we look forward to working with you again next year.

Tami.
