Last Impressions

Do you have an employee who is moving on? All employees leaving Metro North should be provided the opportunity to complete the Last Impressions exit survey.

The Last Impressions survey allows the employee to provide constructive feedback, tell us the reason for their departure, and to highlight areas for recognition and improvement within Metro North.

Metro North is striving to provide the best and safest working environment for its workforce, and this is one way to understand the needs of our people.

Medical Leadership Intensive ProgramMedical Leadership Intensive Program

Are you a medical leader looking to make a difference?

Leading change in our complex and uncertain world is a challenging undertaking, even for those who have been in the game for a long time. This intensive program is scheduled in three sessions over a twelve-week period, designed to equip you with a better understanding of yourself as a leader, how the system works, and how you can navigate the system to survive, thrive and make a difference.

Our expert faculty of highly experienced medical leaders and educators will take you on a deeply immersive journey through the juggling of workforce, business demands and safety and quality in the healthcare system. You will emerge with some answers and many more questions to see you on your leadership pathway, more confident and more curious.

The initial two cohorts will run between May and August, tailored to avoid school holidays. Kicking off with a one-day face to face session, and two more half-day sessions, roughly a month apart, the intent is to help you shape and grow your understanding as you apply your learning in the messy reality of the work context.

Expressions of interest are currently open to all Clinical and Medical Directors across Metro North and you can register your interest here. Email MedicalLeadershipIP_MN@health.qld.gov.au with any questions and for further information.

Margaret Mead We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilised.

Was a healed femur the earliest sign of true civilisation?

Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilisation in a culture. It is said that the student expected Mead to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones.

Instead, Mead shared that the first sign of civilisation in an ancient culture was a femur that had been broken and then healed. In the animal kingdom, Mead explain, if you break your leg, survival is unlikely. An animal with a broken leg is unfit for running from danger, getting to the river to drink or hunting food. Very few animals survive a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal.

In Mead’s view, a broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, bound the wound, carried the person to safety and tended them through recovery. Whilst there are some opposing views to the animal kingdom broken femur survival rate theory, Mead’s message is clear: “Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts.”

We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilised.
