Small recycling makes big difference to marine life

Have you seen the containers around Caboolture Hospital to recycle small plastic items such as bread tags and plastic lids?

Our Food Services team attended a workshop on sustainability within food services recently which sparked a keen interest to make a difference.

The small plastic items collected are given to the Ocean Crusaders group, which works to ensure small plastic items don’t end up in the environment.

Collected items are granulated and remolded to make several new products including crab floats. It takes about three-hundred plastic bottle lids to make one crab float.

Previously, floats were made from polystyrene and often lost to the bottom of the ocean, which was bad news for local marine life including crabs and turtles.

To help the Food Services team and support this initiative, supported by the hospital’s Green Team, simply place your lids in one of the containers in each ward kitchenette and the Wellness Centre.

Food Services staff regularly pick up the donated items and take them to one of the Ocean Crusaders collection locations.

The first delivery to Ocean Crusaders consisted of 12.2kg of bottle tops and 4kg of bread tags. A wonderful help to our waterways and the environment.
