“Our 27 Peer Responders come from all over the hospital. We have doctors, nurses, administrative, and support staff who now all proudly wear the Peer Responder badge,” Dr Yan said.

“Each of them volunteered and applied for the role. There was a selection and interview process, and they all went through training in phycological first aid before they were appointed,” Dr Yan said.

“Peer Responders don’t take the place of professional counsellors. They can help, though, in providing confidential support during tough times.

“They’re well-placed to be a first step in referring staff to ongoing support services they may need.”

Dr Yan said Redcliffe was the second hospital in Metro North to appoint Peer Responders.
