As part of Metro North Health’s strategic vision MN32, Metro North Mental Health is committed to increasing the representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our workforce.

Launched in 2020, the Metro North Indigenous Cadetship Program saw nine Indigenous cadets recruited to Mental Health’s Allied Health unit in 2021.

Tasmin Handsaker is a proud Kamilario woman from Tamworth and about to enter her second cadetship year in 2022 with us in the Northern Continuing Care Team.

I have been so lucky to be involved in a Social Work Indigenous Cadetship with the Southern Team of the Inner North Brisbane Mental Health Service and have learnt so much since I started in May,” Tasmin said.

“The team has provided me with many opportunities to learn and use my skills with consumers, as well as attend multiple workshops to further my professional development.

“I am very passionate about improving mental health outcomes and working to Close the Gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by providing culturally safe and competent services.

“I look forward to beginning my Cadetship next year with the Inner North Brisbane Mental Health Service, Northern Team.”
