RBWH staff member Ashan Fernando and the team in Women’s and Newborn Services have banded together to collect donations to send to Sri Lanka during the current economic crisis.
Ashan has personally sent food and funds to provide 600 school children with food for a month, and the Women’s and Newborn Services team have collected a significant amount of additional non-perishable food which will be sent in the coming weeks.
“Sri Lanka is going through the worst economic and political crisis in its history, and it has come to a point where people, including children, are dying as they cannot access essential items such as food and medical supplies. Public hospitals are even struggling to provide daily meals to their inpatients,” Ashan said.
“The donations we have sent already have been gratefully received by homeless children, three elders homes and a psychiatric patient ward in the area of Kalutara.
“The Women’s and Newborn Services team have been so supportive and we now have an overflowing box full of non-perishable food ready to send.
“I want to encourage and inspire people around me to help those who are less fortunate. Serving those around you brings a unique sense of purpose and fulfillment.”
