You may have noticed the colourful blooms planted along O’Connell Terrace and Herston Road near Victoria Park, but did you know the flowers are specifically chosen to align with health awareness days throughout the year?

Due to the close proximity of RBWH to the gardens, for the past five years Brisbane City Council has been regularly filling them with colours that resonate with staff and patients.

Brisbane City Council Parks Officer Team Leader Jayson Lister said the team plants approximately 4500 new plants every 3-4 months across the two locations.

“We had yellow flowers in July for Sarcoma Awareness Month, and I’m currently planting pink flowers for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October,” Jayson said.

“We usually try to plant the flowers about one month before the awareness month so they have time to flower. It takes about a week of gardening to get them all in!”
