The RBWH Level 1 Pharmacy Team celebrating World Pharmacy Day with some bright florals!

On World Pharmacy Day in September we celebrated the vital roles our pharmacy team provides to the entire hospital.

RBWH Assistant Director of Pharmacy – Systems and Support Brett Sweeney said the Level 1 dispensary is the hub of the RBWH Pharmacy department.

“Within this area we have numerous teams that help manage the procurement and distribution of medications across the hospital,” Brett said.

“On any given day we can have up to ten dispensary staff as well as three dedicated to purchasing needs, up to five in stores managing medications in the wards, three handling the hospital’s imprest needs and another five managing the day-to-day admin duties.

Pharmacists aren’t the only staff members keeping this busy department running though, with support coming from their dedicated administration team as well as from their very own robots.

“We have pharmacy robots that help us by storing stock and managing the dispensing of controlled medications,” Brett said.

“We also have the admin team next door who manage a range of vital roles.

“Together with our pharmacist teams, they help fulfil the core functions needed for the department to be able to operate as well as it does. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to get medications to patients safely or effectively.”

Looking after the immediate medication needs of our inpatients and outpatients is not the only way the Level 1 Pharmacy teams contribute to the daily-running of the hospital. They are also working hard to improve patient outcomes through a variety of research projects.

“The team here are involved with numerous in-house clinical trials to support needs for medication solutions now and in the future,” Brett said.

“At the moment we’re currently managing 80 clinical trials that directly involve our RBWH patients.

“It’s essential to recognise the importance of all of these pharmacy roles in the broader health system and their contributions towards positive patient outcomes.”
