RBWH Director of Research, Women’s and Newborn Services and Metro North Executive Director, Women, Children and Families Stream Professor Leonie Callaway has been awarded the Women’s Healthcare Australasia (WHA) Medal of Distinction.

The Medal is awarded annually to recognise the outstanding contribution of an individual to improving the health of women throughout Australasia through service provision, leadership and/or advocacy. Nominations are received from WHA’s members and reviewed carefully by the board of WHA.

Professor Callaway received the medal for her role in the development of national clinical practice guidelines for the management of pre-gestational diabetes and screening for gestational diabetes, as well as her translation of research into practice including research regarding breastfeeding and insulin therapy in women with type 1 diabetes, underpinning the practical advice provided in national guidelines.

Professor Callaway has also led significant improvement into health systems, services, policy and programs, specifically writing, implementing and evaluating local and state-wide clinical practice guidelines. She has implemented the simplification of gestational diabetes screening processes during the pandemic in Queensland which was adopted Australia-wide and internationally, with publications in press.

Congratulations, Professor Callaway, on receiving this notable honour.
