As it hit its first anniversary this month, the Five Things Nursing podcast also hit 40,000 downloads, with people tuning in from 69 countries. The podcast, hosted by RBWH Staff Wellbeing Consultant Dr Liz Crowe and Nurse Educator, Retrieval Services Queensland Education Team Jesse Spurr, dives deep into a wide variety of topics, highlighting the five most important elements or issues.

Inviting talent from across RBWH, health and academia as guests on the show, the approximately 30-minute episodes are released every Friday and are easily found on Spotify and other podcast platforms.

“We have explored such a variety of topics because there are so many talented people at RBWH who are open and willing to share their expertise,” Liz said.

Podcast episodes have included personality disorders, diabetes, Sorry Business, breast cancer, pain, organ donation and skin care.

With a steadily growing audience, Five Things Nursing has become an important interdisciplinary education tool for many in the nursing, medical and hospital community with a large following also among healthcare students.

“It’s been very exciting to see the impact Five Things Nursing is having,” Liz said.

“The feedback from our audience has been excellent and importantly so has the experience for our guests with many people recognising their expertise and contribution to their field.”

Evidence of the podcast’s reach has included nursing students recognising Liz by her voice in the RBWH lifts, a casual relief staff member fortuitously being placed in an RBWH area which was the focus of an episode they had just listened to, and teachers at educational institutions recommending Five Things Nursing to their students.

“With downloads in over 60 countries, it is very inspiring that the work of people at RBWH is resonating with others right across the globe,” Liz said.
