Nursing students at the Federal University of Health Sciences of Posta Alegre, located in the south of Brazil, have had most of their lectures online this year due to pandemic restrictions. As they were unable to collaborate and learn from each other in person, students were given a mission to create educational tools to help fellow students understand the content of classes. After a module on the hospital admission process, student Melanie Schroder had an idea.

“My teacher showed us a video from the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital which explained the admissions process very well, however the video was in English and many of my classmates only speak Portuguese,” Melanie said.

“I decided to translate and caption the video as my assessment so my classmates could understand. Everyone really enjoyed the video and got a lot out of it.”

Melanie has shared the translated video with the RBWH nursing team to help patients who speak Portuguese.

RBWH Acting Nursing and Midwifery Director, Education, Catriona Booker said she is proud that the video has had such a positive impact on a health service that is disadvantaged due to COVID-19.

“The effort that has gone into translating the video for other students is a testament to the quality and value of this educational tool developed by Surgical & Perioperative Services,” Catriona said.

“We have extended an invitation to continue to support the students in Brazil with our resources and the lessons we have learnt through our experiences.”
