Sharon is in good hands with STARS’ physios Amy and Fin, who have been helping her learn to walk again following a stroke she suffered during a brain tumour removal.
“I’ve had a lot of cancer, I had bowel cancer first diagnosed in 2013 which went to my brain, and now that’s removed I’m having radiation,” Sharon said.
“I lost all movement in my left side, but I’ll continue working on it here and then I’ll have physios working with me at home.
“I can’t wait to get back to my family and my animals – I have horses, a dog, and a parrot and it’s been three months since I’ve seen them!”

I started writing poems about 40 years ago. They would come into my head sometimes at 3am so I started to write them all down and I thought bugger it, I’ll put a book out. Different football clubs started to call me up, sometimes local radio would ring me for a poem about a world disaster and I would have to have it ready by 7am. My voice can be heard reading the ‘Battle of Suncorp’ which is played every year before the State of Origin on the TV. I’ve been all over Australia, I’ve met the Prime Minister and sports people too.
#MondayMantra, Mervyn, 84 years-old, STARS GEMS patient.
“I’m from southern Illinois USA but moved here when I was 16. I did my nurse training at RBWH and have been a nurse in various places for 46 years. My sister and I were adopted, we’ve had quite a life from the beginning, so I am writing a memoir which I plan to turn into a book. My goal now is to get my health back and spend more quality time with my family.”
