    What’s the purpose of values?

Values influence behaviour. They impact how we deliver health care and how patients experience our services.

Organisations that have a vision for delivering high quality services and values that align with that vision are more effective and their employees are more engaged.

    Employee engagement correlates positively with:

    • better financial performance
    • better service delivery outcomes
    • higher levels of innovation
    • more employees advocating for their organisation
    • lower rates of absenteeism
    • employee well-being
    • better staff retention
    • fewer workplace related accidents.

The vision and values of Metro North Health

Metro North Health has a vision to change the face of healthcare through compassion, commitment, innovation and connection.

    Our values are:

    • respect
    • integrity
    • compassion
    • high performance
    • teamwork

These values are reflected in our promise to put people first.

    Values in Action

‘Values in Action’ (VIA) refers to our way of working. It’s an extension of our strategy to put people first and to focus on improving our systems, culture and engagement to create a more inviting environment for everyone. By putting our values into action, we want to deliver better experiences for those who use our services and become a great place to work.

As part of VIA we have values based:

    • recruitment
    • orientation
    • health care

    Values Competency Framework

The values of Metro North Health have been mapped to the Korn Ferry Lominger Competency Framework. This framework provides specific guidance about how to model our values. The framework also forms the basis of the Micro Skills ‘How to’ content.

The typical competencies expected of managers according to level can be found here:

Why is this important and what’s my role?

Everyone has a right to feel safe and respected at work. Our patients and their families don’t just watch how we treat them, they watch how we treat each other. We all have a role to play in living out the values of Metro North Health. As a manager you have an even greater responsibility to lead by example. You should manage staff in a way that aligns with Metro North Health’s values. The Micro Skills resources are designed to help you do this.

What do I need to do?

Make sure your decisions and behaviour always align with the values of Metro North Health. You should not only model the values yourself but make sure your staff do as well. When someone’s not adhering to the Metro North Health values you need to address their behaviour promptly, respectfully and with compassion, and support them to meet the standard expected of all employees.
