Why is this important and what’s my role in this?
All line managers and supervisors are responsible for the safety of their staff. Fire safety is a legislatively mandated responsibility which consists of several parts. As the line manager you are responsible for ensuring that staff are:
- aware of their obligations
- trained on how to behave safely during a fire or other emergency event
- made available to attend training.
What do I need to do?
As a person in charge of work areas you are responsible for ensuring
- Fire safety checks are routinely conducted. See Warden Monthly Checklist
- All staff complete the General Evacuation Instructions (GEI) and the First-response Evacuation Instructions (FREI). Frequency of training via the Metro North Health Talent Management System (TMS):
- GEI – New staff are to complete within 2 days of commencement
- Existing staff to refresh their training annually
- FREI – New staff are to complete within 30 days of commencement
- Existing staff to refresh annually.
- Appointing appropriately trained Wardens sufficient in number to meet the requirements of the building fire and evacuation plan and allow for projected absences and for ensuring they are made available for training.
- Appointed Wardens attend an initial Warden Course and complete skills retention training thereafter at intervals specified in the MNHHS Fire Safety Procedure.
- That you attend evacuation practice prebrief/desk-top meetings to assist with annual review of the building Fire and Evacuation Plan (FEP).
