What is: Management of Workplace Injuries
Supporting staff who are injured at work
Managers play a key role in supporting employees who are injured at work, helping them stay at work or supporting their return to work after an injury or illness.

What do I need to do?
When an incident occurs
- Arrange immediate first aid following a workplace injury or illness.
- Help affected employees receive medical treatment straight away and to get home safely if they can’t resume work.
- Complete a workplace incident report and enter it into the RiskMan system as soon as possible.
- Advise the employee to get a worker’s compensation ‘Work Capacity Certificate’ if they require medical treatment or time off work.
Following an incident
- Keep in regular contact with the injured worker, whether they have time off or recover at work.
- Forward medical certificates to the relevant Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinator (RRTWC).
- Submit leave forms and AVACs through myHR.
- Keep transparent file notes of any communications with the injured worker, RRTWC and HR about workplace rehabilitation and reasonable adjustment processes.
When an employee returns to work
- Organise ‘suitable duties’ for injured workers in line with their documented work capacity and medical restrictions.
- Contact them regularly and monitor their progress.
- Make sure workers who have been certified unfit have a clearance certificate from their treating practitioner before they return to pre-injury duties.
