Domestic and family violence support and resources

On this page

If you or someone you know is impacted by domestic and family violence, there are multiple support options available.

    Employee Assistance Provider

Employees affected by domestic and family violence are encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Provider (EAP). An EAP can provide counselling, information and referral to other services. How to contact an EAP For general matters: 1300 360 364 For domestic and family violence matters: 1300 574 516 In a crisis situation, an EAP can assist to coordinate safe accommodation or other emergent support for the person. In an emergency, always call ‘000’.

List of supports available to all staff

The Queensland Government has released a support package to assist employees affected by DFV that provides public service employees with access to:

    • a minimum of 10 days paid special leave
    • flexible working arrangements
    • reasonable workplace adjustments
    • counselling support services available, the employee assistance program (EAP)
    • This special leave is available to employees affected by DFV, persons requiring leave to support a person directly affected by DFV (e.g. an employee’s sibling is affected by DFV) and potential perpetrators or perpetrators of DFV to encourage behaviour change (e.g. to attend counselling sessions).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander information

    • Brochure – supporting someone who is experiencing family violence (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander)
    • Help card – for people who use violence (Indigenous)
    • Help card – for people who use violence (Torres Strait Islander)

    Other cultural considerations

    • To provide culturally capable services, staff should use culturally appropriate processes and communication strategies when supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
    • Provision of services to women from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds should be in accordance with the Multicultural Queensland Charter as detailed in the Multicultural Recognition Act 2016.
    • Engage an appropriately qualified interpreter, if required, to effectively communicate with people from non-English speaking backgrounds – do not use partners, other family members or a child as interpreters.

To access culturally relevant support for patients, staff or the community, visit the Health Equity QHEPS site.

The Australian Government has developed a Family Safety Pack for men and women living in Australia. It includes information on Australia’s laws regarding domestic and family violence, sexual assault and forced marriage, and a woman’s right to be safe. The family safety pack is translated into 46 different languages.
