Metro North Multicultural Health

On this page

Metro North believes that all people from all communities living in the Metro North catchment should have access to the right care, at the right time and in the right place to ensure they have the best possible health and wellbeing. We are committed to ensure that our patients, families, carers, staff and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse, refugee and asylum-seeking backgrounds are provided with culturally safe, trauma-informed care that is respectful of individuals privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

    Our Team

Our team operates under four areas: Multicultural Health, Language Services, Spiritual Support, and Cultural Care.

    Multicultural Health

This team consists of dedicated project officers who enhance the quality of care across Metro North Health to improve the cultural capacity and capability of our workforce and implementing initiatives to improve the healthcare and wellbeing of CALD patients, visitors and staff and developing resources to improve communication and clinician interactions with culturally diverse patients. Their work aligns with the Queensland Multicultural Policy and Action Plan 2024-2029, ensuring that healthcare services are inclusive, accessible, and culturally responsive.

    Metro North Language Services (MNLS)

MNLS coordinates over 2,500 interpreter bookings each month across Metro North facilities, in-person, via phone and video, ensuring patients have access to effective and accessible in-language support in hundreds of languages including AUSLAN. Translation of resources can be arranged via MNLS. This service helps remove language barriers, supports culturally safe care, and ensures all patients receive equitable, high-quality healthcare.

    Culture and Spirituality

This team includes the roles of Multicultural Liaison Coordinator (MLC) and Spiritual Care Service Coordinator (SCSC), designed to support staff in meeting the needs of diverse communities by ensuring culturally safe, trauma-informed care that respects cultural, spiritual, and religious practices. These roles work closely with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and CALD communities to ensure diverse communities receive care that considers all aspects of their well-being, ultimately improving health outcomes and quality of life.

    Our Resources

We offer a variety of health resources to support communication with diverse communities including the appointment reminder tool, ward communication tool, multilingual posters, and translated documents. These resources help facilitate effective communication with CALD patients when an interpreter is not immediately available, helping to bridge language gaps and ensure patients receive clear, accessible, and culturally appropriate information about their care.

If your team requires translation of resources or development of CALD-specific materials, our team is available to assist in creating culturally responsive and accessible content.
