Values in Action
Bringing our values to life – every day, in every interaction
Our values – the foundation of who we are
In 2017, following the review of the Working for Queensland Survey results, Metro North Health introduced five core values that reflect who we are as an organisation and what we stand for:
These values shape our culture. They guide how we work together, how we care for our patients and communities, and how we collaborate with partners to create a safe, supportive and high-performing workplace.
As we evolve, our systems and strategies may change, but our values remain constant.
What is Values in Action (ViA)?
ViA is more than words – it’s how our values show up in everyday work.
The ViA Framework Wheel (to the right) represents our values and guides us to:
- Embed our values into all that we do, from recruitment and onboarding to decision-making and leadership
- Create a shared understanding of what our values mean in practice
- Support accountability in ways that are constructive, respectful, and aligned with our culture
- Strengthen wellbeing by fostering a positive, inclusive, and purpose-driven workplace
Metro North Health is proud to be a values-led organisation, and ViA is how we bring that commitment to life.
Why refresh the VIA Framework Wheel?
Insights from the Have Your Say (HYS) Survey indicated that our organisational values were not always visible or consistently experienced in everyday work.
This feedback highlighted opportunities to make our values clearer, more practical, and more meaningful across Metro North Health.
In response, we refreshed the ViA Framework wheel through a co-design approach. Staff from across the organisation contributed ideas, reviewed draft content, and helped shape updated value definitions and practical examples of what our values look like in action. You can read more about these definitions and examples further down this page.
We stand against racism and all forms of discrimination
At Metro North Health, racism has no place in how we work, lead or care.
Eliminating racism is core to our Values in Action (ViA) – Respect, Integrity, Compassion, Teamwork and High Performance – and essential to creating a safe health system for every person.
We recognise that racism is systemic and are committed to actively identifying, addressing and overcoming racism to create a safe and equitable health system for all people. We acknowledge our shared responsibility to listen, learn, reflect and act with humility as we work together to challenge inequity and drive positive change. Our commitment is demonstrated through everyday behaviours, accountable leadership, continuous learning, and safe, trusted processes that support speaking up and responding to concerns.
A safe workplace is one where living our values in action means:
- Respect guides every interaction, and diversity is recognised, valued and celebrated.
- Integrity means calling out racism, bias and systemic inequities, and taking responsibility for repair when harm occurs.
- Compassion ensures voices with lived experiences are heard, respected and responded to with care and humility.
- Teamwork builds belonging through shared responsibility for safety and protects psychological safety for all.
- High Performance drives measurable action, continuous learning, and accountability.
This statement is our shared promise to act, listen and lead positive change together.
While this statement sets out our commitment to anti-racism through our values in action, it does not sit alone. Staff are encouraged to use supporting policies, pathways and resources that bring this commitment to life in practice, including:
- Anti-Racism FAQs
- Anti-Racism Policy
- Education resources and further learning.
- Reporting options (RiskMan, Respect@Work, Yarning Hub)
- Stop Racism Campaign page and resources (reporting pathways, FAQs and definitions)
- The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anti-Racism Policy

Living our values – Locally and collectively
Metro North Health spans a wide range of facilities, directorates, and services, all connected by a shared purpose and united by our organisational values.
Each team and service may express the values in ways that reflect their local context. In some areas, this is supported by local cultural programs, shared commitments, or tailored ways of working – and that is encouraged.
At the same time, the ViA Framework provides a common foundation across Metro North Health. It creates shared understanding of our values and supports consistency in how we show up for one another, regardless of where we work.
