This week we had the busiest day across our health service, and throughout Queensland. Metro North saw 512 ambulance presentations on a single day, around 120 more than usual. Of these 370 were priority 1. Managing such a large surge requires many teams across our hospitals and community services to work together to ensure we are maximising our capacity management strategies. Thank you all for doing an outstanding job and keeping patients flowing to where they needed to be.

Message from the Chief Executive

Monday is International Kindness Day. While kindness isn’t technically one of our Metro North values, I think the sentiment underpins our other values. Being kind, whether it’s doing an act of kindness or taking a kind thinking approach, is one of the easiest things we can do. It doesn’t cost us anything to be kind, but it can go a long way in diffusing a difficult situation or improving someone’s day. So, while Monday is International Kindness Day, I highly recommend making every day a kind day.

We have allocated $2 million for minor infrastructure projects across our clinical directorates. This work is now starting so you may see improvements in your local area soon. Over the next few weeks we will be starting to plan for the flu season and our annual flu vaccination program. With COVID still active in the community, we are looking at a combination of both COVID and flu infections and how we manage that in our hospitals and in our workforce. Current modelling shows an influenza peak in July, so our staff vaccination program will likely start in April. Associate Professor Glen Kennedy will be the Acting Executive Director Clinical Services form 12 months from Monday while Dr Liz Whiting is working in the Department of Health. We are currently progressing recruitment processes for our Chief Operating Officer, Chief Finance and Corporate Officer, and Deputy Chief Operating Officer. The HR review is continuing and this week the business case for change was presented at the Board meeting. Consultation meetings on the plan will begin next week. I will keep you updated on the progress and outcomes of the HR review and opportunities to be involved. We are also working on some Metro North wide principles for flexible working arrangements, which has been a regular question topic in the vidcasts. To inform this work, I am seeking your feedback on your experience and thoughts about flexible working arrangements through this short survey. We have received a letter from the CEO of Brisbane Airport Corporation thanking health staff for their work over the past two years at the airport since the borders were closed in February 2020. The letter says that despite the challenges of the pandemic response, the health staff consistently demonstrated integrity, support and collaboration with airport staff.

This Sunday marks the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generation. National Apology Day is a significant day in Australia’s journey to reconciliation which acknowledges the damage and intergenerational trauma of government policy which allowed horrendous treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly the forced removal of children from their families.

14 January 2022|

Over the past nearly two years we have been planning for a surge in COVID-19 cases in our community and in our workforce. The current situation is challenging, but we knew it could happen and we have planned accordingly. Many of our healthcare colleagues interstate and overseas have been facing surge after surge since the pandemic started, so in many ways we are fortunate to have had time to prepare.
